Funny you should bring this up.... not quite tin tent but driving back up from Bristol at the weekend dragging the trailer tent (fairly heavy, large trailer) the truck i was just about to pass in lane one veered into my lane.... dropped the anchors and the car/trailer behaved just as I would like. Nicely dropped from 58ish down to almost stationary with no real issues. Pretty hairy at the time... must remember to grab the footage off the dash cam!
It did feel like the end of the car dropped quickly when I slammed on, I think this is a feature that makes sure the trailer breaks come on! It certainly worked!

If you brake such that the ABS is invoked on the front brakes, the system will apply further pressure on the rear to invoke ABS on those as well, to achieve the best braking performance.

It might have been the trailer brakes coming into effect. I know I started this thread as I've never had to do a full blown emergency stop, but I know that when I have had the brake with some firmness on the pedal, the 'vans braking seems to pull the back end of the car down, only slightly but you can feel it.

Once again not a caravan, but had a brown trouser moment on the A55 one dark damp night towing a race transporter back from a meeting at Ty Croes (as it was then).
I was pressing on, somewhere ‘around’ the limit, when I was passed by an erratically drive E class going way too fast. I watched the rear end go light over the rise in to the Conwy tunnel and knew exactly what was coming next. It took them several hours to clear up... fortunately nobody was hurt.
I have to say the disco performed impeccably, although I’m pretty sure it stopped quicker with the transporter attached (just under 3t loaded).
Once the brakes operate on that it’s like throwing an anchor out!
From experience a braked trailer will stop the car if the brakes are working as they should.

Had to slam the brakes on the Autobahn recently. Some passenger car idiot htought it would be wise to "merge" in to my lane while i was coming downhill somewhere near Kassel on the A7. No problem i'll stop for you f**** p**** of Sh*** and burn the 5.5 ton * 80 km/h *80 km/h. No matter if they have to yield, suckers just pull out. Towed a 109 Series IIa. No smoke from trailer brakes, because they were pretty much non-existent. I got one hell of a blow in't backside when the trailer brake mechanism pushed in and hit the end of its travel. Kept the wheel straight, and hoped for the best.
I returned the trailer to the rental guys immediately after that, they fixed all brakes.
Similar situations twice after that. My decision on all 3 occasions was to make steel origami of the idiot's car but under no circumstances whatsoever i'd be trying to swerve out of the way and endanger people in the other lanes, or take the risk of jackkniving the rig and the idiot driving away unscathed and unaware.
My pants stayed clean, theirs? 2 out of 3 probably didn't even realize what they have done.
