If I could afford one I’d have a D5 in a heartbeat, no question of looking at any thing else. I have a Silver D3 and came across a D4 and a D5 in convoy at the weekend. D4 looks dated beside the D5, it looked in silver with tinted windows.

The D5 is without doubt a good bit of kit, I enjoy driving mines, but, and this is a big but, it’s punching above it’s weight in terms of price and in some areas build quality, something that LR can’t seem to improve.
I paid £125 to get the linear aluminium trim, rather than the standard piano black, it’s cheap plastic that neither looks or feels like aluminium. It looks like it cost LR a £5. The dash itself feels solid but there are lot of areas of cheap plastics that wouldn’t look out of place on something made in Japan.
My one so far has been free of electrical faults, but it’s another area where LR are far behind the competition, LR are full of grand ideas but fail to make them work in reality, Incontrol Pro being the big one, it’s been a pig and a constant source of complaints from owners on all the JLR cars it’s fitted to. Mine has the standard system which isn’t market leading but it works though has been discontinued for 18MY in favour of the Incontrol Pro system.
IMO overall quality was better on my 3 FL2s at a fraction of the cost.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

Side by side I still prefer the shape and styling of the D3/4 to that of the D5. The original D3 was for me the pinnacle of classic large 4X4 design. Perfect combination of utility/practicality and comfort, in my opinion.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

+1. 'Dated' is a pretty meaningless term. I think the D3/4 has a classic elegance. The D5 is a mess of disjointed styles, primarily one style for the rear that doesn't marry effectively with the front.2014 MY Discovery XS Indus Silver. Sadly gone. Second last LR of forty eight years continuous ownership.

For me the D2 was the pinnacle with rear mounted wheel - still miss my metropolis

8) That is gorgeous! I agree dated is not the correct description of a D3 or 4, they are iconic. The D5 is not. The Defender is dated And iconic!
Lets not forget that there are D5 owners without any problems at all. So the design works. It's the backup that's not there for when it doesn't work.

Hasn't that always been the way with LR? If you've a good dealer who knows and cares you get a good view of the car, if you have one that is just looking for the next buck then you get a poor view.

That’s part of the reason I would find it difficult to move brands. I can’t fault the back up.
Also for the first 5 months mine was faultless, it’s the last 2 months that’s been a pain, just silly little things that takes the shine off it a bit.

Maybe the journo is acting under stealth? To get the real picture?
It really does seem like a comms breakdown between the press dept and the dealer on the front line.
If one of my products was getting a public evaluation in the press, I would be all over it, ensuring the best of attention at all times.

She could be stealth, but the number plate is clearly visible and Im sure land rover have people who watch the web for news good and bad.

If it was stealth then it would be a 17 plate as first deliveries were late March.
This car is a very early model and probably should have never been supplied as a review car without all the updates that came in the first couple of months after March.
