The LR Rescue man needed to pop out a plastic pushfit so that he could pull the cover down a bit to get access. He told me that alignment of the starter cable was crucial.
Interesting that you noticed oil as mine had been in to fix an annoying leak which turned out to be a new sump.

Starter motor and oil are separate vehicles chap, and the starter motor one has done 111k miles in over 10years and is dry, whereas the oil leak is on a 2.5year old with 32k miles.

It’s an LR, if they don’t mark their territory now and again, they’ve probably run out of oil Laughing

Understood. The persistent oil leak was ‘cured’ by fitting a new sump to my 3 year old car. The starting problem (clicking not starting) was due to the cable being loose and out of alignment which I assume happened due to Dealership rush. The LR rescue man told me that he saw this cable problem from time to time with no apparent reason.
So perhaps your problem is similar between two cars rather than one.
Just thought I’d line it up for you.

Thanks budd, had a look underneath this morning and could see anything obvious. So gave her a good clean inside and out ready to be collected by Greenflag on Monday and taken to the local garage for repair. I’m still hopeful it’s just the starter or something that simple, but am kind off prepared for worst case scenario too - new block.

 King of the typo.

MY11 D4 5.0 V8, Bournville, lots of goodies!

Now departed: '85 RR Vogue, '94 D1, '95 D1, '70 SIIA, '97 D1, '04 D2a. All V8, except for the SIIA - but that drank as much petrol anyway!
