JLR advises no further D4 Nav map updates beyond 2015
I just got off the phone to JLR's customer care center where they told me that the current mapping update will be the last. There will be no further map updates for the D4 beyond the current 2017 issue that contains 2015 mapping data.
It's interesting because the call to JLR was prompted by Here who provide the map updates. I had spoken to them initially to ask when the new version would be out and they said 'we'd like to issue a new update, but it's up to JLR to take the map data from us and produce the finished product. We (Here) then resell on their behalf'.
This leaves us with enforced obsolescence in cars which are only a few years old.
I know some prefer to use phones or Garmins instead of the inbuilt unit and will be less concerned. If we were talking about city cars that rarely drive further than a few miles, I'd better understand JLR's position. However, Discovery's are widely purchased to drive longer journeys and updated maps even in older head units would still be valuable.
If JLR don't want to issues new map updates, they should relax update restrictions and allow other providers to supply map data. How difficult can that be?

LR’s position is quite simple, you own an obsolete car so you are of no importance to them. Just look at their attitude on heating and crank issues. If you want to matter to them go buy a D5.
I agree, JLRs attitude is appalling, after 40 years of running LRs I can't see a decent replacement for my D4 on the horizon, so maybe the next car will be a Jaguar ? We shall see.

I couldn’t use Tom Tom in my Freelander 2 as the screen affected the signal, fortunately the disco 4 doesn’t appear to suffer so badly and the Tom Tom works in it.

I couldn't wait to see the new D5. But have been mightily unimpressed so far. I love a new car so I'm quite frustrated their new product isn't enough to tempt me out of the D4. Engines, stupidly slow electric folding seats. Loss of true 3 seat middle row. Uncomfortable center seat you can't remove the armrest option out of. Stroke afflicted rear tailgate. I could go on...
The D4 is just too good to change right now. I'm peeved they could release Nav updates but choose not to. The Here mapping company seem to up for it. What a shame JLR aren't!
Like others it forces me to use another nav aid. But ultimately this episode leaves a bad taste knowing that it could be done but they won't.
Bad show JLR. For a while you were king of the hill. But you seem to have followed your out of date maps and lost your way MY13 D4 HSE Causeway Grey with Black Pack.

Doesn't work with the FIU.

I was generalising in order to annoy del tbh ...but I agree it's a poor show for older models as the system is clearly capable of running updated maps

Let’s suppose it takes 2 M in your average western currency cut a release for all regions (Europe, MEA, North Africa, APAC, ...)
- Managing the release, creating a release, testing (one would assume..), documentation, packaging, distribution
- Here probably wants some cash, too, for providing the [always out of date] tiles and address databases
- They sell a set of disks for ~200 in your average western currency and that’s just the European maps
So they need to sell 10k copies to reach IRR.
Now suppose they make roughly 50 k D4s annually (for easy math, the real figures are between 40 and 47 k), it would mean that 1/5 of all D4 owners a. had a navigation system, b. decided to upgrade. Sounds slightly unlikely.
The numbers do become better since the same disks tend to fit more than one model year but it still doesn’t sound like a great business. They must make some appearances of providing an upgrade for the owners so it sounds more like a loss leader on a premium segment “me too” feature.
