4.4 V8. Strong Smell of Fuel & Stalling after steep climb

Hi, a few weeks back we took a trip to Oman. we drove a few trails in to the mountains from sea level and rising to 2000m, towards the top the car started to stink of Fuel and eventually stalled.. it would not fire, and appeared to be flooded? Left it and had a beer... and then it fired straight away.

I was in Low Range with relatively low revs...

Any ideas?

fuel trim has probably maxed out.

If you get stranded.
Unplug the air meter connector.
turn the ignition on for about 5 seconds (should get an error indication)
plug it back in.
Start engine

This should reset fuel trim

Why do you need low gear? High range should be ok
How's the weather in Oman (which area?) Jabal SHams?

Hi, The trails we were on required low range. The mountains above Fins rise from sea level to 1900m, in places they are just washed out trails. Great fun.

We spent 3 days on the trails and swimming in the wadis. Stayed at a great spot on Shams on the last night and drove the trail to Rustaq in the morning. Every August we do a trip here to escape the heat.
