I’ve binned Reitwein Spur for today, it’s bliwing a total hoolie and acorns were coming out of the trees like bullets. Headed souff to Cottbus aviation museum, then on to Stalagluft III back in Poland. Nice and quiet here ar Reunification Day, only noticed it coz no supermarkets were open.
A few pics.
Booootiful F-86 Sabre, first time I’ve seen one in Luftwaffe colours, I think.

And like buses, there’s another just round the corner, waiting restoration.

Still weird seeing a Hind in W German colours bit hey ho, it was a weird time.

Note Hoolie Indicators (some peeps call them wind socks) behind the the Starfighter, it was pretty wild.
And a bootiful condition Fitter, remember seeing those in Polish colours at RIAT a few years ago. Loud and smoky, with an excellent display.

And to show the Rooskiea made cute looking aircraft.

Right, back on the road to Poland.

Getting my coat.
OK, a few tanks on plinths. Anything below is I think, I’ve had too long a day bouncing around Polish back roads to have the energy to google.
Firstly Sherman Firelfy

Then prob one of the, if not the, best tank of the era, T-34 85.

T-55

And lastly T-72, as also seen recently on Salisbury Plain. Just not this one.

A few pics from Stallag Luft III
Representation of the path of Harry, the tunnel that was used. Unfortunately there were no trees there at the time where it came out.

The only real structure left, the basement of the infirmary.

The representation of the beginning of Harry, with the plaque showing the names of the three that did escape in green. In this pic, and the following one showing the names of some of the British escapees, the airmen whose names are in black were murdered by the Gastspo. Very sobering to see how few survived, and even fewer actually escaped.

And finally, The Cooler. Brings back memories of Steve McQueens character being sent there and the thud-thud-slap, thud-thud-slap as he threw the baseball against the wall. Must admit I did hum the theme tune to myself for a wee bit.

This is a good read. Its the story of how the Gestapo killers were hunted down after the war.

Just had first evening scoff here, I’m now pleasantly stuffed.
This

These (onion rings and garlic sauce)

And steak, not massive but it’s hiding under the mushrooms (Ken look away now), and the last of the above mentioned garlic sauce.

For £11.34.
Plus a can of Zuba from the Engel back in the room, though can’t remember the price as it the last of the cans I bought in July 17 on way north to Tallinn. But it was cheap.
Plus BP diesel at £1.07, Ultimate at £1.10, puts a smile on the financial chops.

Bit of a tromping day today, clambering ovet the Reitwein Spur to see what was there to see.
Context time. Reitwein Spur is the only high ground in the area before the Seelow Heights so the Ruskies had to take it. After they crossed the Oder in Feb they held a belt W of the river before final push to the Heights and on to Berlin in April. This shows how useful the Spur was. Kustrin, middle right, is where I’m presently lounging whilst typing this.
Lots of dugouts st the bottom, no good as bunkers but look good for storing stuff, like ammo.
Looked like in the right place, ish
Google Translate is quite useful.
Promised so much, torch was at the ready (I never tromp over a battlefield without one)
But it wasn’t to be
This shows what the hillside looked like at the time
Found Zukhov’s Bunker this time, we’ll as the NKVD rebuilt it after the war.
And a very commanding view he’d have had. Once he had all the trees taken down either by artillery or chopped down to be used in bunkers, I couldn’t do that.
The dude himself
Lots of bunkers and the like, many with trench networks leading from them or two them.
Difficult to see from pics, much more obvious in person.
Also came across this by a track, only one I’ve seen in three walks up this hill. Hopefully, if it’s what I think, he’s with his Comrades or Kameraden.
And the church at the N til of the spur. Lots of signs of small arms and explosion damage. Although 99% of houses & buildings in the area have either been built since 1945 or repaired, you still see the odd house that carried the scars like the church does. I just don’t feel happy taking pics of peeps’ houses.

There’s a Soviet war memorial just down from the hill, I can’t remember how many are buried there but ISTR it ran into thousands. I did my bit to tidy it up by putting some flowers and a photo of a soldier back to where they should be after the gales yesterday.
I suspect these are for those “newly” discovered.
And on the flip side of the coin, this is the memorial for the German soldiers defending Reitwein.
PS Then went to Mallnow on the Heights themselves, but didn’t take many pics. The only one of interest was of some artillery positions on the reverse slope of this ridge. Not a good pic. The German unit that faught here (9th Army) then ended up being surrounded at Halbe. That was not a good place to be.
