Go take a long drive in a D3 (we had one for a weekend) and then try to give it back
Cheers

I fully agree. The only problem is, that once you've owned a Land Rover, you will find it very hard to own anything else. Why is the fear of long words called hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia?

Once you have a LR product as good as a Disco, everything else is second rate.
As for problems, just do a look around other forums and you will find that LR don't have anymore than "basic" vehicles. It's just most LR owners are passionate as LR's have soul. We can be open about the product, good and bad because deep down it is unchallenged as the best. 06 TDV6 SE with many LR and after-market extras. Used only on weekends and trips out west.

Thanks Guys for your feedback.
Can I first apologise for changing the theme of the original thread, a goose about my size pressed the wrong button and wondered where the hell my new thread went!! I've now found it!
Mark, you are exactly correct in that this whole decision between the Disco and a new Pajero started because the salesman at the local dealership gave me a test drive over a weekend of a TDV6 SE (the inconsiderate "mongrel") as he knew I would have difficulty handing it back and so I have agonised over justifying the extra outlay ever since. What is the saying...a good salesman highlights the advantages, then creates the desire and the price becomes secondary. I should know...I'm a salesman and he did a good job on me!
In reallity, I can see the quality of build of the Disco3, from the outside, is much improved from earlier days and conversely as an "improvement" over the previous model Pajero the new one is not as good as I would have hoped for.
I guess it's now only a matter of deciding the colour, what tyres to replace those Goodyears with and do I fit an alloy bulbar or steel.
Again, the feedback is much appreciated,
Regards, Dennis.

Hi Dennis,
Welcome to the forum.
Which model? That would indicate a tyre size, and guys can indicate their preferences.
I have the steel LR bullbar, but if you need something stronger, ARB is the way to go.
Many other accesories to go for,so perhaps also indicate what you would use the vehicle for.

Dennis - buy the Disco - you won't regret it! All marques have their issues - I think with LR, we are such a mob of enthusiasts that we have these forums and share more, so the things that do wrong do come to the surface - Toyota drivers are just driving, well, Toyotas, and they don't care so much, but they have their share of issues too...
With regard to tyres - I've been very happy with the Mickey Thomoson ATZ; if you want to stay in OE tyre size, I'd be looking at the General Grabber.

Pierrej & Simon,
I would be buying a TDV6 SE which I believe comes OE with 255/60R18s and I'm looking at either the Grabber AT2s in that size or the new Yokahama Geolanders in either that size or 265/60R18!
In all my previous vehicles I normally opt for a slightly larger tyre (one size taller / wider) as this normally corrects any speedo inaccuracies, increases ground clearance marginally and provides a slightly better ride, however with all the electronics in these late model vehicles, sometimes this can cause problems with altering change points in gearboxes etc. As I would be swapping tyres while new I want to get it right the first time.
As for bullbars, I'm not a fan of the LR version as I don't believe it provides sufficient protection to the headlights etc and I'd prefer a nice full allow version i.e.ECB or similar. I do get off the beaten track occasionally where the skippys can get thick. I don't need a winch bar as I carry a turfor in the back if i really get stuck.

Hi Hopperoo,
As I have said earlier on this thread, the AT2's are great. It is a very good compromise between on-road manners, and off-road handling. The lug depth makes them ok in mud and sand, without compromising the wet bitumen stopping.
You should not be concerned with going with a larger size, as this is proven and test o this forum, with no ill effects, apart from great off-roading.
As for the bulbar. That is personal preference. One think to look ut for is whether it is airbag compatible, if that is important to you. Why is the fear of long words called hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia?

We have recently fitted the General AT2 Tyres on our HSE.
It is too early to tell how they will wear.
I have noticed and improvement in our feul economy over the Cooper 265x60/R18 fitted before.
We tow a 3500kg Caravan and now get feul economy of 13.3 compared to 17.5.
We were looking for better mileage, improved off road capability.
I am experimenting with the tyre pressures to see how we can get the 15 percent rule in place.

Thanks Dickie,
What size Grabber A/T2s did you fit? Did you stay with the same size as the Coopers or go back to the 255/60R18 OE fitment?
Did you experience any differences with going up to the 265/60R18s as far as gearbox shift points etc?
The reason I ask is, I am aware that with the Diesel Auto Pajeros if you fit larger tyres to them the auto box will not hold lock-up in 5th gear as soon as you hit a slight hill, therefore the vehicle is continually revving harder than the equivalent manual version where you can make the torque in the motor do the work and not need to change down as often.
I'm wondering if the Disco auto box handles it better.
Regards, Dennis.

Hi Dennis,
I replaced the standard Goodyear HT tyres at 25,000km with Geolandar A/T-S tyres. I now have put 9,000km on them - but mostly on the highway. I did a little mud/dirt/rocks in November at Snowies - worked great.
I have noticed no difference to gearbox behaviour.
Standard tyres have a rolling diameter of 763.2mm and these have 775mm. According to that calc site, there is a 1.6% difference in speedo readings. Meaning that it is probably close to the mark now.
Cheers,
Rob

Dennis,
Just came accross this post. I traded a 2005 Pajero Exceed DiD for my Disco 3. I too was worried about reliability.
I have now done 17k including 3 weeks on the Gibb and have not had an issue. The car is much quieter and more comfortable and the air suspension is great. Im sure you will be well pleased with the D3. Take the road less traveled. Dual battery system.ORS drawers,LR cargo Barrier.ARB Bull bar, side protection bars,Mickey Thompson ATR's 17" rims, Rear wheel carrier, radiator guard TPMS Mitchell Bros Tow Hitch LR RAI Steel Rims , GME UHF, Off Road GPS, Llams (yet to be fitted)

I've got 17" rims on my D3 S. The comments on this thread about the General Grabber AT2's have been very complimetary but no-one with 17" rims has mentioned them (I think the only size available is 256/70R17 115S).
Anyone out there who has fitted the 265/70R17's to their D3 Neil Herbert
