Yes, you are right never happened to me ...and the only person I know who it has happened to after being on the site since 2006 is Del. ...oh btw on the crank failure survey we are now up to 34 reports
Better to try and offer some perspective to people rather than be one of the preachers of doom.

Then someone mentions 2nd hands values, no sherlock.
It seems to me people sell the products then do nothing but slag it off now they are in the clear?
Feather ruffling complete for the day.
I genuinely wanted to keep my D4 for a long time, longer than the 9 years I had it - but I wasn't prepared to take the risk - I'm not slagging the product - I've owned Disco 3 / 4 longer than most on this site - in the end, its an individual choice on timing of selling and risk plus the other pros / cons of expensive maintenance etc. - but the latter is applicable to all Premium brands / large 4x4's I guess. Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.

I think most are aware the chances of failure are pretty slim.
It’s just LR’s lack lustre approach to the problem that seems to be the issue.
Run out D4’s were £50k+
Possibly having to fork out another £12k within a few years just to keep it on the road is just mind boggling.
The fact that LR’s used car warranty won’t cover it because it’s a known manufacturing fault just highlights what a pickle LR have got themselves in Discovery 4 HSE

and the 3ltr V6 in the D5 is suffering badly from Oil Dilution, which is why I opted for the 2Ltr Ingenium. I know some have had balancer shaft issues with this engine also, so it seems that no one has a bulletproof engine.

Sums up my thoughts as well, pretty slim, then my Landmark run out model failed at 20k miles and two and a half years, (LR replaced the engine which took a month, and we had a RR sport to run around in) However the rest of your post sums up my thoughts, so sadly it’s gone, would love another but not until LR address the issue, first time in over 20 years we have not had a LR of one shape or form on the driveway.

Unfortunately the crank issue finally got to me when a local farmer had his crank go at 20,000 miles and was told by the dealer that if it had not been under warranty it would have cost him £21000 he ended up in a queue of four at the dealers and it took several weeks to get it back ,mine was a lovely car and never missed a beat but could not afford the risk.I have ended up with an evoque with the 2.2 ford engine as again I could not afford the problems of oil dilution and subsequent issues with balancer shafts in the ingenium engine I know it’s only a small percentage but in this day and age it is much to high for me!

Only in certain models, for both the V6 and I4 - it's not an engine issue but a vehicle architecture one Disco 5 HSE Lux

It is said on the ingenium engines fitted in evoque and disco sport that the dpf is fitted to far to the rear of the car and not benefiting from enough heat from the engine to self generate without the customery injection of diesel and oil dilution takes place,I would have thought if it was an easy fix Landrover would have done it ,end result is still the same expensive engine repairs or replacement.

Sold my MY15 HSE Lux to help fund house purchase, was just about to come out of its 3 year manufacturers warranty, I'm now quite relieved it's gone as I was constantly worrying and wandering if it would go 'Bang', especially with more than likely no help from LR if it did
I'm now driving a 2005 S model with 127k on the clock, paid under £4k for it, brilliant car and I'm no longer worrying. I have a BMW 525d as main car, and have the disco for towing, camping and of course the snow Iggy/Ieuan
Current LR =
2015 RR Sport Autobiography
&
1992 Land Rover Defender Camper
- Gone but not forgotten:
MY10 D4 GS
MY05 Disco 3 'S'
MY14 FL2 HSE manual in Blue
MY15 Disco 4 HSE Lux in Santorini Black
MY08 Disco 3 SE manual in Buck Blue
1960 Series 2 88" (No idea why I sold it!)
