and the 3ltr V6 in the D5 is suffering badly from Oil Dilution, which is why I opted for the 2Ltr Ingenium. I know some have had balancer shaft issues with this engine also, so it seems that no one has a bulletproof engine.

Sold my MY15 HSE Lux to help fund house purchase, was just about to come out of its 3 year manufacturers warranty, I'm now quite relieved it's gone as I was constantly worrying and wandering if it would go 'Bang', especially with more than likely no help from LR if it did
I'm now driving a 2005 S model with 127k on the clock, paid under £4k for it, brilliant car and I'm no longer worrying. I have a BMW 525d as main car, and have the disco for towing, camping and of course the snow
Just need to save up for the rusty sill repairs on the older ones

Hi looking at your YouTube video the engine is miss firing and making a chuffing noise, are you sure it’s not a injector seal. If the crank goes it doesn’t normally miss. Is there any black smoke out the exhaust?

There's no black smoke Rob. Those video's aren't actually my car, they are Del's (DSL) from his thread back in 2015. However, mine was making exactly the same noises.

They’ve either chosen to ignore it or it’s simply not an issue for them.

I don't think they ignored it or decided that it was not an issue. It just became an ideal opportunity to sell a £4k replacement engine for over £12k. Nice earner.
With depreciation taking hold and many choosing to scrap rather than buy a new engine JLR sensed a new issue and lowered the £4k engine to £6k+ or so retail. Still a nice earner.
Sure a few customers get raped but you have to replace falling sales targets with something and their marketing folk think that brand loyalty is just not supported by the numbers. For markets where litigation has more teeth they will admit the issue, but in the UK they say whatever they like.
a good summary of the situation.

As the car is now off the road and waiting for a new engine to be fitted by Oval Autos, I thought I'd have a look at the filter in case I had accidentally crushed it when I did the last oil and filter change.
Thankfully, the filter was fine which makes me feel slightly better that this was not my fault.
Here you can see the the tiny fragments of metal in the oil that drained from the filter and also some stuck at the top of the filter cap...
