googled how to get old gloss off brickwork and found some in favour of caustic soda.
mixed it with water ... probably a bit strong in hindsight as fumes were a bit strong a i walked outside with it.
wore gloves .... of course. used a nylon scouring pad. some success, but a bit random.
then felt something in my eye ... turned out this was
a. not caustic
b. lucky !
as i got the eye-bath and ran water, my fingers felt "soapy". knew straight up this was caustic soda getting through the gloves. plenty of water, feeling less soapy ... then realised it had started dissolving one of my finger nails had no idea it could do that.
sorted it by adding a bottle of vinegar to a bucket of water and soaking my hand in it for 10 mins.
so ... note to self : GET SOME BETTER GLOVES FOR NEXT ATTEMPT
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I'd still be there now. that sign saying "4 hours" should say "at the very least." too.

now that was funny ... even contains wit from DG, so no wonder you remembered it 9 years on.
and do not be concerned HWN ... i followed the instructions, just over-did the quantity required. funnily enough, did that last time i used caustic soda ... added it to rolled-up bits of aluminium foil to clean some silver. the silver is really clean ... the lawn WILL (probably) recover from the splashes.
