I like AdBlue, but....
...just how much plastic are we needlessly throwing away? Plastic that we didn’t throw away before. This photo was taken when I stopped at the petrol station tonight:
There’s a phenomenal weight of plastic in these single use containers and my local authority won’t take them for recycling as they’re >3 litres. And they are next to impossible to cut / saw up into chunks.

Our weekly recycling collection accepts them.
There’s no nationwide standards on what local councils will collect as recyclable material. Which, IMO, needs to be changed.

Plastic recycling? Sounds easy BUT is much more difficult in practise.
The simplistic mantra is reduce, reuse, recycle and in that order.
China used to be a major importer of waste plastic items for recycling but have greatly reduced the amount they are importing.
Countries such as the Philippines and Malaysia are getting tougher on the imported 'plastics for recycling' which actually turns out to be dirty plastic based household waste. Their courts are now beginning to instruct that the waste is to be sent back to the country of origin.
Now think about the amount of single use plastic containers in a house, be it shampoo, washing up liquid etc. Doubling the container size does not double plastic used in the container. Then why not be able to get thin walled sachets to refill the thick wall rigid containers?
How easy is it to actually recycle rigid walled spray containers. Apart from two or more plastics use often of different colours and often containing a metal spring in the spray mechanism. So it is not an easy job just to recycle them. We need to be able to reuse these plastic containers as much as possible.
Instead of supermarkets offering 50 million types of shampoo/bodywash etc how about 4/5 versions with big barrels and just refill the plastic rigid wall containers?
Yes we all need to rethink different ways of using plastics and care in recycling them.

We fix one problem but create another bigger problem. They just get swept under the rug until there in the spotlight by the media and the people that can be bothered to make a fuss.
As long as we are here we will be making problems that we ultimately can’t solve. There is no answer and there never will be........until we are gone!

Of course, the evidence that AdBlue actually does anything useful for diesel cars is rather thin or even deliberately misleading.
Not to be confused with the full SCRs in trucks though - same fluid but a different beast. Plenty evidence that these systems have environmental benefits.

SCR needs Adblue to work
You only have too look at any Euro 6 car or truck tail pipe to see just how amazing the latest systems are, totally spotless.
65 plate Scanias 600k and tailpipe still as clean as new inside.
Read recently that Euro6 is making the particles so small they are now entering the food chain

Iirc 6mths is max storage time for Adblue especially once container has been opened, why I have no idea, maybe starts to crystalise?
Also read the same, six months, or eighteen months if unopened. Should also be stored at less than 25 degrees and out of direct sunlight, complete opposite to a garage forecourt.

depends how you store it - but we consume loads the disco and range rover takes about 10-15l a top upMike

Adblue is just about reducing emissions, not saving the planet
Recycling and such things are just a sticking plaster on the climate change / global warming issue. The UK is responsible for < 1% of global carbon emissions and nothing we in the UK do will affect the issue at a global level more than marginally. The only thing that will rescue the situation is the global human population stabilising / reducing, and / or people consuming less (= a less 'affluent ' lifestyle).
Of course, humans being what they are, that is never going to happen.
Sensibly, the best thing to do would be to work on ways to either engineer temperature reductions and / or ways to deal with temperature increases. Measures to reduce CO2 emissions etc etc in the UK are a waste of time IMHO given the human race's short term approach.
