Was it meant to be? Confused Evolution rather than revolution perhaps ...though the sad thing is that most of the whiners focus on the square meter at the back ...in my experience ...eg. owning one rather than just having a pop ....it is a very competent motor ...the technology and capability far exceeds the D3 \ 4 on and off-road.

You’ve misunderstood me. I wasn’t slating the D5. I said that I thought the D3 could become a classic, but doubted that the D5 would. Apparently I was dreaming to say such a thing.

You’re right though, there are numerous reasons why I don’t want a D5. Laughing Thumbs Up

From the D2 to the D5 there has been a progression in body shape and technology.

Even I can remember the veiled hostility aimed at the models that succeed the prior ones and the protestations that they’d never catch on. This is just the latest episode and people are of course, wrong.

The D3/4 might be iconic with one or two die hard enthusiasts, particularly on here, but really that’s about it. I’ve had both vehicles before the D5 and all I can say is I don’t miss the old models and the D5 is streets ahead of them in every respect, Censored end included. Thumbs Up

You’re totally missing the point.

I’m not comparing the D5 to the D3. I’m saying that at launch the design and technology of the D3 was far more revolutionary and for that reason it’s more likely to become a classic.

The D3 with air suspension and Terrain Response System, twin chassis and immensely practical design etc. was a revelation back in 2004.

I’ve no doubt that in 20 years time a mint original example of an early D3, will be both more desirable and valuable than an early model D5.

The D3 is a classic example of Form and Function in design, the D5 isn’t.

The D2 was tractor-like compared to the D3, so the step up was significant and I agree it was revolutionary. I never anticipated that the D5 would be revolutionary ...except perhaps in the area of in-car electronics which are way above the D4 in every way.

In other aspects, it is totally an evolution, upwards but also sideways, away from the tonka feel and more towards the RR and an on-road bias. This move was intentional and it will be down to the likes of the new defender to fill the traditional tonka, rufty turfty side of the D4 that we (a tiny minority) might crave.

I don't think "we", the tonka preferring fraternity, are a minority. The lacklustre sales of the D5 suggests (and to a certain extent the current trend for 'authentic' and 'retro' reinforces) there is still a desire for a "proper" off road orientated vehicles (even if they are still driven to the supermarket and back, which look and feel as such. The D5, whether it is capable or not, simply does not convey traditional LR values (the ones LR are desperate to hide). Until the D5 LR had never produced a truly fugly vehicle before. Laughing

And another thing...

Merc still do the G Wagen and Unimog, still have proper tonka like styling and still sell. Obviously not their top sellers but they have retained their roots.

Interesting piece on taking D5's across Peru. Does the job but the summary is:

Likes

Class-leading off-road capability.
Roomy, luxurious interior.
Top-of-the-line driver aids.

Dislikes

Unimpressive fuel mileage.
Forgettable exterior design.
That old Land Rover character is missing, even if it did come with oil leaks.

For me that sums up the D5 and as a die hard, Camel Trophy wannabe LR fanatic, it does nothing for me. The botched back end is the final nail in the coffin in a vehicle that is perhaps the best example of how LR has lost its way.

As much as I liked my D3 and D4, they weren’t a patch on the D5, but I accept the older generation may not like it favouring a bit of nostalgia. Suppose they go well parked next to a Morris Marina Snigger
