I get what you mean
My post was aimed at the op
I assumed it was, just applied a bit of emphasis.
only doubt in my head about the insurance route is that i have a feeling my late uncle didn't get a payout because he'd put the fire out and the vehicle was not destroyed by the fire. but that was 40+ years ago, so i may not have remembered the full story.

It’s no different to a crash, if it’s financially viable to repair, they will. If not, it’s a write off.
With that damage, I’d be tempted to buy it back as a project car.
I’ve been thinking of upgrading a D3 dash and wiring to D4 but it’s a big project and would need a wiring damaged base vehicle really. If you like projects, you could enjoy modifying/repairing it.

Hardware, I wasn't being funny I knew what you meant but as your last post says they will try and find away out of it as they have not been very forthcoming as yet, as I can not book the claim in for 3 days yet as the dept dealing with it is fully booked.
Not even a couersty car !
Yet policy clearly states there is one, so going to book a hire car and claim.
Would like to have it repaired as it was, no is a great car this year alone we have been to cornwallx2 Devon Yorkshire and somerset and never missed a beat.

power comes in thru the top connectors.
I would have thought anything going out of the bottom connector was fused (by that fuse box)
Is there a melted / bare wire in that loom on the left ?
DId it rub on the metal on the left ?
Get a mirror behind the back of that loom

Well had a call today! From isrance 'agents' who now claim that it's not covered, I asked where in policy it's not for 'fire' she said not if it's elec?
Then there a call from another ' agent' Coplus who deal with claims.
Oh and no car!The insurance company is Covea T/a as Sir thing and I think they are now looking for a way out. Try ringing them and see what they do and need for a claim????
Never told this when taking out insurance and they take your money.
Time to put in the hands of a no win no fee claims company.

I was once told by someone that it was better to let the car burn than to try and save it - for exactly this reason

Oh god NOW I know!
We will have to wait and see as I've look at he documents they emailed me and it just states Fire so they are send a MIC guy to look at it.
So we will see,
I had similar damage in my Freelander and established it had been caused by one of the previous owner's fitting tow bar electrics badly, which had subsequently been removed before I bought the car. They had left the connections behind the trim in the boot in a right state, which in turn caused the problem.
In the end I had to strip most of the interior out, tracing back where wires had overheated and melted through their insulation. The damage ran across multiple circuits, most damage being caused where the loom passed through grommets so was tightly bundled and more likely to damage multiple cables if one overheated.
For some complex bits I sourced secondhand loom sections. For others, I was able to replace individual wires. Took me a couple of weekends of stripping it down, pulling out the bits I was replacing, sourcing replacements and putting it back together.
Freelander 1 does use BCU and ECU, so there's some complexity there, but it's lightyears from being the spaghetti you find in a D3.
Be prepared for the insurers finding a modification by a previous owner is to blame and denying the claim. Insurers often exclude cover for claims caused by negligent modifications. If that is the case, you will want to do a thorough check of all the main loom sections for damage before deciding how to proceed. Areas such as the loom that runs through the sill panel next to the passenger seat are known for problems even without a fire in the fusebox, so that's one are in particular to check.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I know it is like saying how long is a pice of string but any one know what would need replacing in this?
May look at replacing wireing and fusebox.
Thanks guys.

As you say, how longs a piece of string but to guess, I would say body harness (I’ve seen them for £200 to £800 but you need the correct match as there’s about 30 versions. You need a BCU/fuze box with the corresponding security bits like ECU, Keys and I think clocks (£200 to £300 on eBay). Possibly engine harness (again correct one required) and Dash Harness (again correct one required) plus the trims etc.
It will need the dash board out (did a Disco 4 dash out, new harness in and dash in again in a day with FamousFive) and interior out (seats and Carpets) which can take a few hours.

If you try and find what wire or colour coming out of the bottom of the fusebox, this will help locate the root cause. which is important to ensure the repair works.
If you are luck you may need:
loom between fuse box and underbonnet fuse box. £150 ish ebay?
CJB fuse box and programming. £500+
then need to see what has happened to the wiring coming out the bottom to see what else is needed.
Should remove the glovebox (which is not a small job - centre console needs pulling rearward)
Was everything electrical working on the car while on fire? as far as you noticed?!
Also consider your car is worth quite a lot with a good engine, so that is an option you should consider
I would be intersted in any melted wires coming out of the bottom connector. (e.g colour or pin number) to see if I can help understand root cause
