MCTs exist somewhere on a scale of slightly unpleasant to very nasty. Unfortunately, until more diagnostic work is done, you can't tell where on that scale an individual MCT sits.
Removal of the tumour with wide margins of what appears to be healthy tissue is necessary to try to remove the edges and send the tumour to the lab for histopathology. The histopathologists report will give a grading (the older I to IV scale has now been superseded with just low or high grade). Depending on the initial results, further testing to look at Ki-67 markers and the c-kit gene to determine it's likely aggressiveness and behaviour.
Chest x-rays and abdominal ultrasound may be necessary to see if the MCT has spread to other areas of the body - not all MCTs spread but some do.
Chemotherapy is a possibility, there is a specific drug (Toceranib) for treating MCTs in dogs.
All you can do is take the diagnostic work-up step by step and see where it takes you. In many cases (about 75%), surgical removal of the tumour is all that is required.MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added

I’d discuss it first tbh, if it has spread to his chest then I’m afraid it’s not good and I wouldn’t operate. But if the vet says no the chest is clear and we don’t think it’ll spread then you have a whole different ball game. We have a bitch that had one as a youngster as a tie and it was an easy choice and has been successful. We also have an old boy 13 that has a tumour on his chest and another on his back that we won’t touch, he’s not being caused any problems so if you don’t need to touch it then you’re best off not.
Will just have to wait and see next Friday, I've known the vet since Max was born, she's cared for him throughout his knee issues and has a huge soft spot for him (as I have for her! )
JohnM, great bit of knowledge there and very useful Just got to wait and see what happens next week
Having a whiskey now with Max sat my lap Iggy/Ieuan

Toby , our lab had a mast cell tumour , we read all the google stuff and prepared ourselves for the worst , it was sent of and came back as extremely low grade ( something to do with the way the cells divided in pathology )
The vet was pleased with the result and told us not to worry , never had MST return and the surround skin was all clear .
We Lost Toby 18months ago but to something else not MST
There is hope !
