Steve Backshaw was telling everyone how harmless the Bull and Tiger sharks were in the Bahamas, then a month later that young woman got ripped to pieces whilst snorkelling. I remember fishing in Florida at Bahia Honda in the Keys for Tarpon, a couple of hundred yards of the shore under the bridge, we saw some big Bull sharks and a Hammerhead ate one tarpon in half with one bite, that fish was nearly 6ft long and weighed around 100lb. Black Tips are responsible for 16% of all shark attacks in Florida Laughing

Not forgetting the stingrays, as happened to Steve Irwin. Sad

But not to worry Gareth, humpback whales are harmless. Unless they take a fancy to your boat. Whistle Whistle

I’m sure Gareth has sorted out his humpback survival strategy. He doesn’t have to outswim the whale, just has to keep out swimming the next slowest swimmer. Whoever that might be. Whistle Whistle

Had a look at the price of flights there, it’s actually not bad, but boy it takes a while to get there, that would be the killer. Wink

16 year old daughter swanning off with her Aunt to South Korea and Japan next Summer, maybe have to take advantage of some space when she’s off.

Yes flights are easy and not overly priced. The journey (door to resort) was 30 hours for us. That was hard, but plenty of books to read kept us sane. Could have done without the delay at the start which meant no time to connect at LAX

Journey home starts tomorrow. We have a long lay over (8hrs) in LA. So plan to leave the airport and get a taxi to Santa Monica pier for a while.

Does anyone know if my UK Uber app will work seamlessly in the USA?

Oh and don’t forget the time difference. It’s BST minus 11. Mega jet lag territory!

Last day of our trip, so we went whale watching outside of the reef that surrounds the island.

One staggering fact that we learned was that in places just beyond our hotel, just 300 metres from the shore, the water is 900 metres deep! 😮 And if you go 1km off shore it’s 3000 metres.

This apparently makes it attractive for hump back wales, and they come right up to edge of the reef.

After 3 hours in a small speed boat, we managed a spot of a whale! Not the proliferation we were promised, but I managed to get a couple of decent pictures from a very wobbly boat.

It’s a bit of a slow pastime is whale watching, so also got a decent picture of a Air Tahiti ATR 42 coming into land, and decent shot of a bird!

Also, for Derek, I got a better picture of the US Army gun emplacement and bunker, as I had my long range lens on the camera.

So that’s it. Return to dull and autumnal UK. Its been a dream holiday this. I’d love to come back and do more, but as said earlier, it’s a hell of a journey to get here.

Cheers all 👍

Great pics, bunker looks interesting if not fun & games to get to. Hope trip back is uneventful, if not very long. Jet lag is officially one of my top hates. Thumbs Up
