Need double din help
Hi-
I searched a bunch on this site. Since I’m a new member I can PM anyone. Figured I would make a post and see if someone can help me out.
I just got a 08 LR3 SE7. I have the high line radio/cd player. I do have an amp under the seat. I do not have a screen above the radio, or bluetooth. (Didn’t find anyone with the exact same set up)
Is that my only option to retain the factory amp? Is that something I can source for less? Seems like a lot of money just for a harness.
Any other options to bypass the factory amp but not splice the harness at the amp? Trying to keep it as clean as possible Incase I ever decide to revert it back to stock.
Last question- anyone run a back up camera? These have a good field of view but I like having a camera to back up to my trailer. Any recommendations on cameras and tips to get the wire back. I would like to mount it next to the license plate light. I would need a camera that I can center the pic even though the camera will be mounted off center. Not sure if that’s done in the head unit or with the camera?
Thanks in advance,
Joe

The old style wiring looms to convert these used to be a long extention cable that went from the head unit to the amp very simple but you lost the sat nav, steering comtrols and the ability to change the clock.
On my camper van i use a wireless camera it works great and no need to run wires through the vehicle

I don’t have sat Nav. I don’t think the clock would bother me to much, but I would like to maintain the steering wheel controls.
Are all the amps under the seat MOST? That harness I posted looks like it would work. $300 is a good bit, but it might be my only option. I don’t want to relocate the stock head unit under the seat.

yes one option is a long cable from amp to new headunit.
other option is an audio and most convertor.
See if you can spot the good items from this thread!

Hi,
This is what I am going to get to bypass the amp. I have the Hi Line too, but with the Sat Nav. I havent got it yet so cant comment on if it works or not.

Let me know how it works. I read some guys had issues when bypassing the factory amp. I might end up biting the bullet and buying that expensive harness to get things to work. Seems the only think I would possibly loose is the clock on the dash.
Please reply in this thread or shoot
me a PM when you receive your harness. I’m curious on how it works and if you like it.
Thanks,
Joe

I put a DD in my SE with base stereo but if i was doing it now i'd fit one of these , they hook into the aux input with no other wiring required.

I have a high line radio so replacing the head unit is a little more involved.
It looks like the one in the link has a high line. That screen is pretty sweet and it’s cheaper then the harness I was looking at. Seems it has an option to add a back up camera. I also wouldn’t loose my clock on the dash.
I wonder if anyone here installed that? Curious on how they like it.
Thanks for bringing that to my attention!
Edit-
After looking at it a little more... it’s android and I’m Apple. I think I can get a converter? I did notice someone said their sound didn’t work after install. The only other thing I don’t like is the top corners don’t look like a tight fit.

Hi,
A friend of mine fitted a double din stereo from China and it lasted nearly 3 months. When he tried to get a refund they said that he was only covered for 14 day! Luckily he only paid about £70. I would be very wary of buying at that sort of price bracket without some assurances and ideally genuine reviews.
I currently have a tablet sat on the dash connected through the Aux, and it is so much quieter than the stereo if I forget to turn it down I get deafened.
I could live with this option but I want something better, hence why I am thinking of swapping the head unit. I am in no rush as the current set up works OK and TBH wouldn't be any different to the above option.
If youre considering the above option, I would think about just putting an iPad mini in front of the nav screen. You can take it out and use it for other things then?!?! My tablet is a 10" and it looks fine, I would want something better long term, but its OK.Discovery 4 GS 2009 Auto Stornoway Grey

I think your right about the no name brands. If they worked well I think more people would carry them.
What about using a LR4 bezel uptop? I think I saw someone did that it’s a smaller screen screen but it looked really clean.

Not sure how they replaced the head unit and maintained use of the screen above. Most of the posts I read, you loose function of the top screen. I don’t have a top screen, but looks like a good install.

I have used cartronics before very good company.
I expect they are using a converter to convert the signals into fibre optics so the new head unit can communicate with the MOST system.

Just to let you know I tried the bypass kit as per my post above and it worked fine. \the sat nav screen doesnt work, but I plan so maybe swap this for a tablet anyway. I have put everything back as I am waiting for the facia now. I will put up some pics once the facia arrives.
I will also be selling the head unit, sat nav screen and amp soon, if anyone's interested.Discovery 4 GS 2009 Auto Stornoway Grey

This is how I currently have the tablet, its a 10" so if I built one in, itd have to be a 7 or 8" one.
