Sad Day.....Advice needed D3
Hi all,
I have a D3 2006 158000 miles on the clock. She gave up the ghost about 2 weeks ago when driving she just suddenly started splurging and kangarooing down the road then died. She started again but then died immediately. No warning lights on dash....I try and turn her over but just get a click noise. I have had the battery checked and she is all good....I have also had the starter motor checked and she is fine. I have had a local mechanic look at her and h.e said it is the crank shaft and pulleys? I have no idea I’m a telephone engineer not a mechanic so I have taken his word for it.
Can I get this confirmed with a diagnostics machine. I had one guy come out with an all singing and dancing machine and it just read canbus issues and he said it’s because I have LED’S for internal lights. He reset this and the car did not start when he tried. Just kept doing the click noise.
Any advice guys...she is up for sale on the bay and here but I’m so desperate to keep her that I want to make sure she is proper ready to go to Landy heaven before I spend any more money on her....
Cheers everyone, any advice would be helpful...!

I would hazard a guess the mechanic was telling you the truth and the engine is fubar.
Any mech worth their salt would have tried to turn the crank by hand, no go = dead.

Sounds like the crank has gone or possibly the oil pump casing has cracked but to the “mechanic “ that blamed your leds needs to give his heads wobble. As mentioned above you need to try and get the crank turned over by hand. Good luck 👍🏻

Hallo Atto.
I saw your disco for sale advert. A very nice looking car. Sorry its broken.
Maybe...
1. Repair it / fit another LR engine.
2. I have read on forum that you can use a Jaguar engine. And its a bit cheap as compared to LR3 engine. Though you have to borrow and swap some parts from your engine...thats all I know. Maybe doesn't apply to your model.
3. Break it and sell it for parts. Looks like broken LR3 is worth more when sold as parts.
4. Sell it as it is. Top up. And wait for a good one to come up for sale.
Thx.

Hi, have you seen this up for sale on here, the following link? Maybe you could do an engine swap? Just because I'd read your post and then this one?

Thanks everyone for the advice. We have decided to sell her as she is. I still can’t understand why I’m not getting any warning signs even though the engine is knackered, surely I would have got an engine management light? Sorry to keep harping on just really don’t want her to go, but really don’t want to spend anymore money on her! Worked out I’ve spent over £5000 on her since January this year....!

Bit like when my D3 died, I’d just had the gearbox reconditioned and the engine failed 4k miles later. Mistake I made is thinking that with enough tlc she’d live for ever. Sadly not.

Yeah unfortunately with these babies you just never know when to stop! But of a stupid question but if I was to take her apart bit by bit what do I do with the chassis and anything’s that’s left, can I get it picked up by scrappy....? Thanks

Unfortunately I’ve no idea re scrapping the chassis. My car got picked over for a day, until I filled my D4, then left her to be scrapped in NW Norway. She was looking a bit sad last time I saw her.

ISTR DiscoDunc scrapped his down to that level, might be worth trying to find his thread(s). ISTR he cut up the bodyshell and trailered it to be weighed in, and chassis was sold, poss with engine & gearbox.

I believe you can scrap the thing yourself, ie cut it up and weigh it in, or get a scrappy to take it away, they most likely will want the vehicle docs, but make sure dvla know it has been scrapped.

Its a bit harder than it used to be to scrap your own car as DVLA will normally only accept a scrapped notification from a authorised treatment facility. If you do it yourself you have to write to DVLA and tell them where you have broken the vehicle up and how you have disposed of the oils/engine gearbox chassis etc. You must show them that it has been done in an environmentally friendly way and that you have not caused any pollution of the area where you broke up the vehicle. Not sure that they would ever check up on what you tell them however!
