Battery or altenator???

On my 2011 discovery 4 had the charging system fault come up on the dash yesterday.Tried to start it today and it really struggled then when it finally started it threw up error code after error code. Is there an easy way to tell if its the battery or alternator????

If the light came on while you were driving, most likely the alternator. The battery may have suffered if the alternator has been playing up.
Charge the battery off the car, and check it.

Thanks rrhool. Have noticed since the indicator on the battery says it dead and needs replacing NOT charging. Been looking at halfors and they do 2 batteries for discovery's, one a stop/start and one not stop/start. My disco does not have stop / start. Would it make a difference which one I fitted as stop/start one has higher ah rating ?

Have a look at you battery to see what type it is.
I think your 2014 will be a AMG type.

So new battery fitted today. Unfortunately bloke with engine diagnostic wasn't in to "tell car had a new battery fitted" Unfortunately I do not own my own.... Car started OK with no error codes but while driving home "charge system failure" came up on dash again. Would not telling the car a new battery had been fitted cause this or am I looking at a new alternator??

The advice I got on here was
"There is no need to reset anything the system will quickly adapt to a new battery"

Changed my battery recently as it started to not pull it's weight. It was the original battery (impressive). The car was quite happy with the new one. Mine's a 2010 vehicle. If the alternator is not working, you'll soon know that as it won't take very long for the battery to go flat. Have a search on here for what your battery should be reading when charging (i.e. car running) and see where that leads you. Or failing that, do the old trick of pointing the car onto the garage door, run it with lots of accessories and headlights on and after a while give it a good rev, see if the lights get any brighter. I guess that works with today's cars...Obviously if the lights get a bit brighter, then the alternator is doing something!
