Car tax, I might have cocked it up!
I was going to tax our 14 year old Jazz tomorrow prior to selling it, got eyes on a swanky new Hybrid Jazz. However OJ (Old Jazz) is presently SORNed and was on a private plate which I’ve just put on retention. I’ve just twigged that I should have waited until tomorrow, taxed her, then taken the plate off as I now don’t now have a valid V5C reference to tax her against!
I’ve not told SWMBO as she said wait until tomorrow, tax her then put the plate on retention, but I couldn’t wait. Now I’m in the pre-dodo state before she finds out.
Assuming the new V5 will take at least a few days to get here and I need to get the car out and about tomorrow, anyone know if I can phone up DVLA and tax her on just the reg number, plus pos the old V5 reference? Or how I get out of this hole I’ve dug myself?
If I don’t appear here again SWMBO will have found out.

Looks like that’s my only option. To get it taxed at the PO I need V5 & MOT cert, both of which are several hundred miles away. All coz I was too impatient.

Are you putting the private plate on the new Jazz? If so can’t you tax it using the retention reference number? this was how the dealer taxed my Defender. Maybe just a dealer thing though.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

No, just taken the plate off the Jazz. She’s showing SORNed ok on the new “normal” reg number on the app I’m using. The retention doc and new V5 should be winging its way here shortly. But the ref number on the old reg doc now doesn’t work, nor on the new ref. If that makes sense.
Just need to get her taxed before she’s off to WBAC or similar. And the new battery, which should be delivered tomorrow.

All sorted, one phone call to the DVLA and the old girl is taxed. As HW sez, very helpful and only took a few minutes with 22 minute hold, vast improvement on days of old. Can now get the car out on the mean streets, well once the replacement battery arrives from Tanya.

It’s all a bit academic now.
The number is off, car scrubbed to with an inch of its life, more dog hairs removed than we though our old dogs had and all assorted junk removed. New battery fitted, took her for a blast around the houses (remember this is a Jazz so blast is relatively sedate for other cars) to clean off the brakes (she was last driven in August last year), she was all ready to go and get priced up for trading in for a nice shiny new all singing and all dancing Jazz Hybrid. We might get £800 for her and spend £21k for a car that will sit doing nothing for virtually all the time. OJ (old jazz) was doing 1,000 miles a year, that would be less now as we get Tesco deliveries
So she’s had a reprieve and is staying. And wonder if I can get the £80 retention fee back if I phone up and say “I shouldn’t have taken the number off, please can you put it back?”.
