Nige some year back ,a lot of years I had Dutch contacts re business. One of them was recounting his child hood memories of his great grandfather who was a fisherman. He had contacts with the north east coast of Scotland and both sides could converse with each other in a common language which was probably Doric or a version of it. So what language do we speak. Saw the same in Brittany where Breton and Welsh fishermen were conversing in Gallic, their version. Coming from a North Lanarkshire mining village was challenging. When I went to high school in Motherwell for the first year I was given elocution lessons for the first year so other could understand me. I was not alone. As to what language do you speak? Does it really matter as long as others understand you. In the long run yes as if you can’t speak properly you don’t have a grammar or be able to spell. Having worked in North Yorkshire I rest my case.Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.

One of our neighbours was selling eggs from a G-Plan table labelled "£1". They went out this morning to find it had gone, with a £1 coin left in its place. The sign now reads "Eggs - £1 a box".
