GPS GSM Tracking Device

Anyone tried one of these out yet? About 100 quid - seems ideal for hiding in the vehicle as a tracking device for not too much dosh. Looks like it can run off 12v, and just needs a SIM to allow it to send SMS position messages. I've ordered one so will update this thread once i've played around with it.

Yes, I'll post more info and pics if it works OK. I've got an old Orange SIM so can test it as soon as it arrives. I'm struggling to find much tech info on it at this stage but it looks like it runs off 12V, so I'll wire it to a permanent feed somewhere in the dash. It's quad GSM band so should be no problems there, and with the SiRF GPS technology should be able to get a good GPS fix from a well hidden position. The ability to monitor sound via the device could be very interesting, especially when it's at the stealers for some tricky persistent fault diagnosis ("yeah, that Censored Mr X's car again, always moaning the Censored Censored , just bill him 3 hours labour anyway, cuppa tea anyone?")! Of course there will be some EU law that means you can't use it fof that unless there's a big yellow Health and Safety sticker on your door, but of course there is no law to protect the consumer against excessive dealer costs in return for Censored customer service.
Oooops, rant over, diagressed a bit Laughing

They may have difficulty with some airport security systems, but from what I hear they should be fine at T5 Whistle

I would be inerested to know what they are like, the only concern is the GPS reception if it is in the car hidden out of sight.

I guess as a back up you could use the GSM location service which several companies offer by triangulating the GSM aerials in use,

It's fitted with the SiRF Star 3 20 channel GPS chip which is really sensitive so should be fine even if it's well hidden. I've got a Bluetooth GPS with the same chip in it, and you can leave it in a bag deep in the boot and the GPS reception is still excellent, and that's with the window tint film fitted which attenuates the GPS signal strength slightly.

At £100 and coming from Hong Kong there's going to be a wad of tax/duty to be paid. Plus the Royal Snail will add on its £8 handling charge.

Ever thought of working for the Samaritans Confused

I'm sure there are ways of minimising the duty Whistle - the £400 Nikon lens that arrived last week didn't cost me anything extra so fingers crossed.
