About 200 miles since successfully sorting the oil leak!!
Lovely rattle and vibration but remained running enough to get to lay-by!

Was driving normally at just under 50mph when vibration started,
Wifey though it sounded like someone hitting metal poles together so sounds pretty terminal!!
No warning lights and oil level hasn’t changed.

No oil leaking so all contained and hopefully block is ok?

Need to pluck up the courage and enthusiasm to poke into it or get garages involved!!

Anyone got Christian and Vera’s phone number???

Take the oil filter out first to confirm your first conclussion. Sadly it has happened to many!

If confirmed you are then in a tricky spot as JLR refurbed engine that will give you 2 yrs warranty will when fitted come out very near the value of your D4 . If you feel like fitting it yourself the engine will be £6.5k as long as the blocks ok for a rebuild.
I was lucky and JLR paid for mine however thats wont be the case with yours .

That’s the plan.
Was going to do that whilst waiting for the lorry, but I didn’t have any gloves or wet wipes!

Knew it was more likely a when rather than if..

Going to leave it a few days to get over it failing before entering the full depression!!

Yup
It’s not been near a dealer or approved workshop for many years and it’s “too old” for them.

Unknown service history before me and obvious from what I’ve done that someone has been in it before!
Unless JLR magically admit to the cruddy design flaw… I’m on my own.
But think I’ll have more luck breeding unicorns than them admitting that!

I have rebuilt engines before (mainly rover V8 and BMW) so as long as the block is Ok and there is no damage to the main parts then I may look to rebuild myself! (Oh dear!)
Assuming I can get the parts of course .

Failing that the options are pretty obvious and unpalatable.

Censored . I had it with my first D4, 82k and pop it went, i'd bought it from an indy dealer and it'd been serviced elsewhere etc, no help offered from LR other than to take it in part-ex for another one from them, which I took. I've had two since and haven't taken them to anyone other than LR for anything including MOT's and tyres, just in case the worst was to happen again, but it makes them silly expensive to run. I just wish I could get my head around having something different but I love the D4.

Best of luck with yours, at least you're in the good position of having the skills to repair it yourself!

Thanks

Was expecting something but not this soon!!

“Skills “ - Debatable!!!
Sanity - deffo not

Pig headededness and now not trusting many local garages (bar a select few) - definitely!!

Must be gutted, hope it gets sorted, I'd recommend trying to get JLR to contribute even though it's an inherent design flaw. Ours nearly killed us on the M4 doing 70 mph when the crankshaft / bearings went. Took over 4 months to get it fixed but still the best vehicle ever.
