Transmission swap
Hi all,
I have a Discovery 3 6 speed auto,
While i'm more than happy with it, i've had it 10 years and has never let me down.
I am often asked why don't i get a newer car as i've had it so long ?
Honestly there's nothing i'd want to change it for except possibly and 8sp D4.
So my question is has anyone been silly enough to swap out the 6 speed for an 8HP one ?

Why?
I got an 8 spd jag and as you pull away slowly, it spends most of its time shifting up the gears until it gets to 4th at 30 mph
Well seams like it anyway.

If no-one has done it before, for the sake of some labour I may have to be the first.
I can't see any mechanical issue with why it wouldn't work but possibly a programming one where the car can't see 7th & 8th and won't show on the dash when in manual mode.
My car is a late D3 so it may have the necessary software to cope with it.
I'll leave it a while to see if anyone is as warped as I am and commented on their experience and if not may just give it a go, i've got a spare 8HP to try.

I think the CANBUS speeds is the biggest worry.
And maybe the 8 spd had the round gear selector knob

Its not the labour thats the problem, getting the trans to talk to the different CANBUS speeds, swapping into a D4 is possible and is being done here in AUS.
Physically it will bolt in but everything else is where the work including adapting a suitable shifter.
I would do it myself if it could be done easily.

Maybe possible with Cantcu 8HP is being fitted to everything these days and is a much nicer and stronger box than the 6HP.

"stronger" ? well, the 6speeds are doing their jobs fine in the heavyD3/4 really i see no reason regarding durability tbh...

It can handle up to 1000nm of torque so i'd take that as being stronger than ZF6.

but he, i am dutch.. quite direct sometimes.. don't take it personally Best regards

3 Discos and an L322 Range Rover here with a combined mileage of over 700k on their original 6hp’s, one common denominator - they’ve all been well serviced. No shudder, no worn casings etc etc. No doubt I’ll be in a minority of 1 but always found the 8 speed to be a fussy pain in the box in any application I’ve driven it in.

Yes you are bang on .... dead right you are in a minority of one! You are the first person I know of who have prefered the ZF6 to the ZF8. The 8HP as the smoothest of changes usually only noticed by watching the tacho and makes a much better job of keeping any engine in its most effecient torque band. The 8HP is one of the reasons late D4's are quicker and more economical.
