Looking to purchase a d4 …. Do I or don’t I !!!

As above looking at getting back behind a disco again had a d3 and loved had a few issues minor compared to some but sold few years back

Looking at a d4 but hear nothing but horror stories and the camshaft failures gambled with my d3 by the looks of it but is there a less problematic engine or year to go for reference a d4?

Any advice welcomed

Thanks in advance

You can have a D4 RHD & fab 5L V8 engine if you import from Japan.
Check this forum for threads. Expensive choice, but many benefits.

A great option I have seen these if only!

What’s the failure rate of the diesel crank shafts and are their certain years too look out for?

Worth upgrading changing out or not worth the hassle

Really want to get back behind a d4 or I feel i will end up with a d2 and transplant a m57 engine into it

I think you will get only positive views in this forum;)

Sadly, entering into the market now means a higher mileage. And as maintenance is paramount; filtering through the well and, not well maintained will be your chore.

Which brings me to the fact that mine was not well maintained. But I got it back into proper working order and I’m going to keep it this way. Sure, spent more than a few dollars but it is such a pleasure to drive both in and out of the city, and the woods.

Keep in mind that we attend the forum to not just find fixes but also to be proactive in our maintenance.

On this side of the pond, its only the petrol option. Though many swear by the older 5l, 6 speed, I’m quite happy with the 3l scv6, 8 speed. Many knock the stop/start technology but I like it; not from a mileage point of view but from the simple perspective: why treat mother nature unnecessarily poor. Age is not to be overlooked. Plastic, rubber, and even metal exposed to the elements all deteriorate with age. And electronics (and there are many) eventually EOL.

I can pull a tractor out of the mud (have done it), climb a rocky path, fiord with water over the tires, and go out to a Michelin star restaurant in style.

It is a very clever merging of luxurious, practical, and “let’s go have fun”. Mind you, its an old school heavy vehicle (the reason I wanted one). Mileage is not pretty compared to the modern equivalents. And maintenance will be expensive. And it seems as much as I like it, onlookers like it more.
