no one can deny the D5 was and still is the ugly duckiling of the range and needs to get back closer to the older D3/4 in styling ...which is the reason the defender sold so well disco market niche will be pimped 5+2 defender ..........with a square rear numberplate !!!!

•Defender: 110,367 vehicles sold globally, making it the most popular model
•Range Rover: 66,956 vehicles sold globally
•Range Rover Sport: 58,067 vehicles sold globally
•Range Rover Evoque: 47,222 vehicles sold globally
•Discovery Sport: 30,422 vehicles sold globally
•Range Rover Velar: 26,559 vehicles sold globally
•Discovery 5: 16,750 vehicles sold globally

Which again begs the question- What will LR do to the next Discovery to increase its sales figures?

D5's problems were nicely highlighted when the chief designer started blaming dealers for putting the wrong shape of numberplate on the back.

Note that it's not that the whole design is just wrong to many eyes (and, yes, there are people who like it), it's the dealer fitting the wrong number plate.

I'd love to know why so many people are buying Defender rather than Discovery - Shape/design? Size? Capability? I'd be happy to donate a fiver to a chosen charity in a bet that the D6 will be just a rehash of D5 (just as D4 followed D3), and that it'll sell about as well as D5.

2 years ago, the CEO of JLR was saying that they're looking to make the Disco in to a family car (whatever that means):

Whether that's still the thinking, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Looking at the "family car" idea, that would seem to be what the Velar is - it's a big, 4wd, comfy, luxurious estate car.

One thought comes to mind - might LR go back to its earlier line up - Range Rover and Defender but with each being a family of models. Discovery was, after all, invented as a way to get in to family SUV market. These days, that requirement is filled by the Range Rover and Defender families. Discovery doesn't fit in without stepping on one or other range's toes(*). Betwixt and between. Which is a shame because the Disco was a great vehicle in its own right for so many years.

(* one might suggest the RRS is now doing this with it being ever more like a slightly cheaper, lower spec, FFRR rather than an obviously different model in former years.)

Well when it comes to replacing my D4 in a few years we'll see what the D6 will be like but I must say I will be sitting in one of these first to see if I fancy a change...

Yes, the 4-pot seems like a case of "we don't think we'll sell many in the UK so keep the old motor for them".

Reading between the lines, looks like they’ll possibly move the Discovery more into the MPV category.
