Roaring noise while driving

Both Dealer and myself struggling to identify a roaring noise while driving. I tow a lot and the noise is more audible while towing, i.e engine under load.
Definately coming from front end. Sounds like a small cc engine increasing in revs in the background even although engine revs are constant. more prominent going up hill ie under load.
It is a high pitch roar that increases in volume and then decreases in volume of its own accord.
If I hear the noise and press the clutch you can hear the engine die down and then the roar dies down about 1 second after.
Anyone any ideas?

Welcome to the site!
Turbo? That would explain the whining down after a few seconds!
I'm probably wrong though!

Had new turbo fitted 6000 miles ago. Would assume turbo would be a constant noise not rising and dying while engine at constant revs?

I said that I was probably wrong!

Also, are you suggesting that teenagers are unable to scream?

Guys have just edited my post. It is more of a roar than a whine. Also had new rear diff fitted 2000 miles ago.

Now, there are two ways you could do that and I'm certain I don't want either!

My first D2 has a viscous fan that used to semi seize now and then, this gave a delayed roaring noise.

If it's a 'roar' then it sounds like the engine cooling fan is working NORMALLY it is not a viscous fan but an electronically controlled fan with a clutch controlled by a PWM signal dependent upon various engine temperature readings
