The only thing you can criticize them for is sidewall strength, but then they are a road tyre. I think their offroad ability is down to the car's knack of finding traction when it shouldn't be able to, thereby making the tyres look good.
Pelyma you mean [the goodyears] offroad ability is down to the D3's ability to find traction when it shouldn't be able to? Or the scorpions?

I went through two sets of Scorpions before I exchanged my last D3, and I got 30K out of each set and I managed to get the replacements for £90 per tyre fitted, but these last set of Scorpions we purchased a 9 to 12 months ago, if my memory serves me well. Just before I decided to exchange the old D3 for a new one, I replaced the tyres and went for Toyo based on a colleagues recommendation. The Toyo is equivellant to a Mitchellin, but is purely a road tyre. I was quite impressed with them and the road noise actually improved when they were fitted, but I guess I only noticed the noise difference because the Scopions were worn to the legal limit. At £125 per tyre fitted from E-Tyre you can't complain, but only if you don't go off road.

I have just been told that my Pirellis will soon need changing (23,000 miles on clock at moment) First quote from a long standing contact for new Pirelli Zeros is £154 + vat each fitted and balanced. How does this compare with prices elsewhere?

Both are good off road for a road biased tyre... but personally having Wrangler's on all three Freelander's and my first D3, I would give the Wrangler the edge. They seem to have more grip and are less prone to scrabble like the Pirelli.
