Cooking Oil V's Diesel
Has anyone out there used cooking oil as a substitute to diesel in their D3, I use to use it in my old 90 with an NA diesel engine. With the cost of diesel rising weekly there must be a cheaper fuel.2010/60 Discovery 4 XS Zermatt Silver - Privacy Glass, Timed Climate (with remote), Voice, 4x4 screen, Bong on lock/un-lock (Pete BellAutos)

OK this subject is a tangle of worms
I have been resurching for a wile now and found out,
Most diesel engines can run on veg oil but it is the fuel delivery system where the problem is.
Newer ones with computor controles get all the wrong messages from veg oil, ? ecu remap ?
Then there is the problem of lack of lubrication in modern pumps with veg oil.
Veg iol is a solvent, diesel is a oil, so rubber components need change.
You need to heat the veg oil to get it to the same viscocity as diesel.
These latest engines have much finer injector nozels , this has implecations for filtering and pushing the veg oil through.
So far IMO veg oil conversion on a TDV6 would be too dificult and expencive, but possible , In conclusion if you have the money to spend on it why bother, as you can afford the price of diesel.
Bio seems possible with some mods, and as D3s are sold in countrys that only have diesel/bio blends there must be replacement rubber parts compatable with bio.
I am thinking of giving veg oil a go on my Tojo, so far the engine is very suitable, the kit to run veg is simple and suitable for DIY, the only box left to tick is finding a bulk supply of veg oil.
Used veg oil takes too much time to get and wasts fuel running around getting small amounts here and there.
Well that is my take on the subject, and if I can get enough veg oil at the right price Tojo is getting a dose of veg oil , hope he likes it

Wouldnt bother. At most you could mix in about 10% (guess) which makes it not worth considering. Best get a remap IMHO.There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

"Biodiesel Handling an Use Guidelines" document from the U.S. Department of Energy says:
Raw or refined vegetable oil, or recycled greases that have not been processed into biodiesel, are not biodiesel and should be avoided. Research shows that vegetable oil or greases used in CI engines at levels as low as 10% to 20%, can cause long-term engine deposits, ring sticking, lube oil gelling, and other maintenance problems and can reduce engine life. These problems are caused mostly by the greater viscosity, or thickness, of the raw oils (around 40 mm2/s) compared to that of the diesel fuel for which the engines and injectors were designed (between 1.3 and 4.1 mm2/s). To avoid viscosity-related problems, vegetable oils and other feedstocks are converted into biodiesel. Through the process of converting vegetable oil or greases to biodiesel, we reduce viscosity of the fuel to values similar to conventional diesel fuel ( biodiesel values are typically between 4 and 5 mm2/s).
It is possible to make you're own bio-diesel from veg oil with something like this for example:http://www.graham-laming.com/bd/ecosystem/state_diagram_new.htm

The owners manual says you cannot use bio diesel fuel in a Discovery 3. I would like to know why also. On page 175 of the owners manual is says under diesel fuel. Caution This Vehicle is NOT compatible with
Bio- Diesel Fuel. Its says on page 332 Diesel or Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) to EN 590 specification .
Basically, the homemade mix is too viscous for modern hp systems. Shame though, my 300tdi could run happily on 50% veg..

Officially EN 15940:2016 (= HVO) is a drop in replacement for EN 590 diesel.
Here, Neste sells MY Renewable Diesel but why would you want to buy it beyond getting a feeling you’re doing something good for the planet? It is priced higher than 98E5 and 1.5x regular EN 590…..

Isn't cooking oil producing more emulsions?

Holy Old thread revival 2008 you can't run veg in a modern derv engine as we all know.
I did run neat svo new in our terrano at 95% plus 5% miss fuel to thin it a bit.
Car is still going strong at 210k miles

Nope it never did plus side tho it had zero emmissions come test time and the UK gov made us get rid of our old cars, it's outside the karncxnt zone now

Proves a point though, all this effort to move to electric cars which still depend on rare consumable dug out of the ground to make the batteries, while they beat down any talk about making existing combustion engines that’ll take alternative, emissions free fuel.2008 HSE Stornoway Grey
