Spare wheel lowering mechanism failure |
|
Got the puncture repaired - but wanted to rather put the brand new spare on and the repaired one on spare. Half way through the lowering process the mechanism failed - lever got very tight and then it seemed to STRIP .
Well I also stripped my moer as I am on my own and took about an hour to remove wheel which is now inside the luggage area as LR must order a new unit and could take up to 2 weeks. Erstwhile - D3 S '07. Dual battery system. Upgraded tow hitch. Mantec skid plate. Frontrunner rr. Tmax double headed built in compressor

Did you like me put the punctured wheel/tyre in the boot/trunk and rewind the winch without the wheel on it - if yes that's what caused it to fail. Quite a few of us have had this, but fortunately I got mine replaced under warranty - hope yours is still under warranty as well.
But for reference for the others these winches need the wheel weight in place when being wound in LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Had a similar fault with mine. The cable binds on the reel. Found that if you keep light tension on the cable it does not happen. The first time it happened i also had a very stripped moer and proceeded to remove my thumb nail on the wheel nut spanner. had it flipped open the wrong way. We live and learn hey

I had similar experience with my winch before the RWC was fitted - did you check whether the cable is twisted or full of sand? This is what happened to mine (both sand and twisted). I got my 9-year-old to crawl under the vehicle and straighten it out for me, then sprayed it with a bit of Q20, wiped it off, and with him hanging on to weight the cable it wound up great. Bit if you have used brute force, I don't think you will have an easy fix..

Poor little mite. How long before you remembered he was there? Before you had the puncture repaired I hope!

LR Waterford for great customer service !!! |
|
Popped in at LR Waterford on Friday to get another opinion on the D3 suspension/shocks. While there I asked Jan Nienaber if he has a lowering mechanism in stock - indeed he had and 15 min later job was done
I am however too embarrassed to reveal how Jan sorted out the suspension problem - suffice to say that a quick visit to the local Engen and vehicle is back too normal Erstwhile - D3 S '07. Dual battery system. Upgraded tow hitch. Mantec skid plate. Frontrunner rr. Tmax double headed built in compressor
