United Kingdom 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Manual Buckingham BlueDiscovery 3

My manual box has loosened up in her first 500 miles, when selecting reverse I always put her into 2nd beforehand, I do this on any car I drive...what happens when you learn on a mini!! Stops the layshaft spinning or some techotalk like that!! So yeah any car will engage reverse better if you select a forward gear first! 8)

Clutch spin is a phenomenon caused by the clutch driven plate spinning after it has been released from the flywheel. It could be just inertia that keeps it spinning long enough to baulk a reverse gear selection attempt.

Selecting 1st, or any forward gear will engage the synchromesh unit on that gear and stop the gears turning, allowing reverse to be selected. This has happened to a greater or lesser extent on all manual cars I have driven, most cars crunch when reverse is selected - You want to try getting a 66 Series 2a into reverse, or any gear without a crunch!

The problem could be dirt in the clutch assembly causing the clutch not to release properly.

I don't know if its still the case, but do you chaps with manual gearboxes still have to fit a wading plug to the bell housing prior to off-road driving? If you do, and you havent, then you could have a clutch full of crud that is sticking, and causing excessive clutch spin.
