Catalytic Converter

Hi All,

This is the first time I have used this excellent forum - although I have been viewing many of the threads with interest for the last few months

I am hoping that someone may be able to assist with a problem I have been having with my Disco as follows:

When driving it feels as though the engine is 'missing' and it is necessary to increase power in order to temporarily 'fix' the issue.

This problem does not happen ALL of the time.

I think it may have (and hoping that it isn't!!) somethig to do with the Catalyitic Converter - if it is - is this an easy problem to identify and confirm - I live some way away from the Land Rover Garage that I use for services etc.

Thanks in advance for any assistance recieved.

cheers

Marc

Welcome, - I'm sad to say your English is much better than my French...

As you are in France are we right in assuming that you have a TDV6 engine?

This being the case the catalytic converter is not the most likely source of your problems.

A few questions to help us help you.
First does your problem only happen when the engine is cold?
Or when the engine is hot?
Does this happen at a particular speed?
Are there any strange or different noises from the engine when this happens?
Do you get any messages or warning lights on the instrument panel?

Rob,

Very many thanks for getting back to me - I was begining to wonder if I had not explained the problem well enough!

I must admit to being a bit of a fraud - I am English - hence the reason why I am glad you didn't reply in French!! - or we both would have been confused!

To answer your questions:

Yes TDV6 Engine - just had L/Rover 60000 mile service (now at 60700 miles)
No - No warning lights on instrument panel.
Only happens when the engine is hot and at low speeds typically 1-3 gear and upto approx 40/50 mph
No strange noises coming from engine area
A very strange whining noise (sometimes) coming from under the vehicle in and around the area of the front passenger - this goes after approx 1 min on engine start up.

Car feels jumpy and misfires unless speed is increased over 60 mph and kept constant. Anything below this when the engine is warm - is just not pleasant at all!

I have left the car with my local (Not Land Rover) as I am very worried that I will do more damage if I continue to drive it - I have asked them to look at the Cat and also the Fuel Pump? - but any advice help etc from you would be brilliant.

Once again - thanks you very much for getting back to me.

Have a good day

Cheers

Marc

You said:

"A very strange whining noise (sometimes) coming from under the vehicle in and around the area of the front passenger - this goes after approx 1 min on engine start up."

This is probably the air suspension compressor activating to raise the suspension and is quite normal. Try listening at ground level when you start up and you should be able to confirm this and eliminate one nagging worry.

Doesn't the compressor sit near the left rear wheel ?

Many thanks for the advice.

I will visit the garage in a bit and get them to eliminate this issue by doing exactly as you suggest.

Will keep you infoed as to the outcome.

Heine,

Good one - never thought of the 'airflow meter'.

As it is currently in a NON L/Rover garage - are there any top tips on them locating this to confirm or deny that this is the issue? - or does it have to go onto a L/Rover diagnostic machine etc?

Once again - thanks

It is about central on the left side - just about beneath the rear passenger footwell, so if you're inside the vehicle, it could sound as though it's coming from beneath the front passenger seat on a RHD vehicle.

AFAIK most faults will show up as an incorrect voltage reading , but I don't know what is a correct reading or exactly how to measure it Embarassed . I suspect you would need a test book

Heine, Bill and Rob,

have just returned from the garage with the news that they don't think it is a problem with the Cat.

They are more convinced that it is dirty injectors causing the missfire and as such will be cleaning these asp to see if this fixes the problem.

May I take this opportunity to thank you all for taking the time to offer advice etc - very much appreciated - and of course I will update as to the end outcome - hopefully later this week.
Thumbs Up
Take care all!!

Cheers
