My TDV6 Auto hardly ever gets into 6th gear due to the 50mph speed limit most of the way to work. Most people tend to drive at 48mph due to the constant threat of mobile speed cameras on this road. If I go into "manual mode" I can make it change up at 50mph to 6th but as soon as the speed drops 1mph below 50mph it changes down to 5th.
Is there any solution to this problem apart from getting a manual gearbox version???

How many revs are you seeing when in 5th ?
If around 2K don't worry... 6th probably too high for the rev range which is why its reticent to change up and keeps changing back down to 5th.
2K is where the engine is at its most fuel efficient BTW.
Solution probably is not to worry about it
I only change (manual) to 6th if at around 70MPH. This keeps the revs around the 2K mark and allows for anything up to 33MPG when cruising.
50mph is exactly where the 'manual' mode will allow a change to 6th, anything below this, the box will automatically select 5th - even in manual mode.
As Simon says, best to leave it in auto and let the box do its own thing. I understand that you may be trying to keep the revs as low as possible for fuel conservation, but even at a perfectly steady 50mph, the revs are too low for things like maintaining a battery charge. It's nothing to worry about The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

Best fuel economy is not obtained at the lowest engine speed, but at the optimum speed for the load. This speed starts off quite low for light load and increases towards maximum torque speed as the load rises. 6th gear probably only comes into its own in terms of economy at around 70mph, but there are noise and wear benefits at lower speeds.
