O goodness.....
Seen this excellent post only now....
Filled front diff untill it started spilling out from the drain plug (about 650ml) - then the rest of the 2 litre into the rear.... as per LR. They said that the rear will take the rest of the 2 liter (4 x 500ml bottels) but it will not run out the drain plug - therefore you do the front first. When I took out the filler plug from the rear, no oil was spilling - and after putting in the 1.3 liter, it also did not spill out....
Should I drain about .200 out? Will it ruin the diff?

Which Lr dealer was this? Should go for re-train or possible never probably trained, firstly front and rear diff oils are NOT THE Same well that's if your D3 it true SA version with rear diff being e-diff!! So did they sell you the wrong oil as well? there should be oil spec and quantity in my gallery !ask them about damage espesially if they sold you the wrong oil A few mods... and keeping it all running...Faultmate MSV2

OK, went to the other dealer in Centurion and explained my problem... few swear words later, got the correct stuff with new LR part number for discount price.
When I opened the new box - Castrol Differential BOT 720 was inside.... shipped all the way from UK. It is still 75W90 oil Full Synthetic - and made for semi slip differentials....
Will read up if I can find any specs on BOT720....

Thanks for the write-up Ridgeback, changed my front diff oil yesterday no trouble at all. At 61K miles there was a bit of oil staining around the diff so I thought there might be a leak, but still about 550 to 600ml of old oil drained from it. Same swarf, oil very brown like treacle color. New oil £22 / litre from dealer and the new oil container had a fill nozzle built into it, and with the wheel off the car you cvan access the fill hole easily with with it.
Got peace of mind now that its had a bit of preventative maintenance, and the "leak" was nothing to worry about.

I did my front diff oil replacement this afternoon...lol not exactly followed your example to the T.
I have learnt my lesson! I removed the drain plug first...! Big mistake! the diff oil exploded out of the drain
hole in my face!
Afterwards I realized the last time the diff oil was replaced it was at see level and when I did it this afternoon it was at 1600 meters above sea level no wonder it exploded! The pressure inside the diff compartment was much higher than the atmospheric pressure at 1600 meters above sea level...
Shouldn't be pressurised - your breather (comes out by the expansion bottle) must be blocked. There is a replacement available as the original type was prone to blocking causing the seals in the diff to leak.Mark.

Did mine a couple of weeks ago thanks to RM's guide. The Castrol SAF XO has now been replaced by Castrol Syntrax Longlife. Probably the same stuff with a new name. Easy job with a Draper oil pump to measure the quantity of fresh oil.

If you search ebay for "Draper Oil Suction Gun" you should find them for about a tenner. It is basically an oversized syringe that lets you suck oil up (I used a plastic measuring jug to ensure the correct volume) and then squirt into the diffs.
I bought it for doing the transfer box initially. Made it easy to refill and no spillages on the driveway.

I did my D3 front diff oil change today and noticed that there was quite a bit of pressure inside the diff. Luckily I opened the 8mm hex first, so I didn't get oils in my face from drain plug
But some one mentioned breathers. I tryed to search the forums and also under the car so I could notice where that breather is located, but wasn't lucky with the search's. My D3 is my. 2005.
So, does anybode know / have pictures where those breathers are located (in both diff's) and can those breathers be bought online? Via what web page?
Or do I have to go to local dealer... I would like to change those breathers before seals broke because pressure inside diff's and oil comes out of them.
Will change the rear diff oil tomorrow. Front diff's oil was quite dark and there was quite a lot "stuf" in that drain plug.===============

Getting a new front diff on Tuesday (luckily under extended warranty). I will ask them to also change the oil in the rear diff as well. Only 75k km but seems to be a good idea. Probably will ask them how much a oil change for the transfer box is as well. But next time around I can do it myself with this great guide and the excellent pictures.
