Sorry Deon, I should have made an exception in your case. Wink

On reflection, I should withdraw that earlier remark altogether. Embarassed

Digging up a very old thread here - eventually got rid of my D2 roofrack so can justify getting one for the D3. So back to the golden question - which one?

Hannibal vs FR vs African Outback. I've had each of these racks on previous landies before and always stuck with Hannibal due to their quality (and knowing the guys very well) I see the FR one is very popular (good price?), although from my knowledge the lateral slats of the FR is kind of irritating in wind. (yes, there is that "wind deflector" thingy).

In general I'm pretty chuffed with the Outback one too, although their rack for the D3 is only 1.7m long. Essentially I want as much as possible space available on the roof without affecting anything else. Here the 2.2m FR takes the lead with Hannibal on 1.9m.

Choice, choices, choices....

Just ordered a custom made big country rack for the FFRR. Should get it early next week. It looks a very well made rack and extremely lightweight. I like the idea of the main slats running front to back and hopefully this will cut out a lot of the noise. I must stress that the noise aspect is the solitary reason for me looking any further than FrontRunner because their product and support has been nothing short of amazing the past 4 years.

Thanks guys. The lateral slats is in my opinion the only major drawback of the FR racks. On the other hand, a rack is a rack Wink The Outback one I had on my Defender (http://picasaweb.google.com/gerudman/PreviousLandies#5344665058347319314) probably took quite a beating from being used quite a lot for travelling, so I'd make them a major contender.

I would like to get a sliding table again (one of the best ideas since slices bread) so guess I'll have to go and have a look at both of them and take it from there. Hannibal also, in my opinion, make the best awnings, so I think I just might have answered my own question... Laughing

I must admit that, when I was looking at racks, I wanted the transverse slats of the FrontRunner to facilitate the fitting of longer items, such as kayaks.

To this point, wind noise hasn't been an issue. However, with all the concerns about the noise I had designed (in my mind) a "deflector" such as shown by Blue Meanie.

Best Wishes,
Peter

Whaddya think?

Took them a long while to fit it because the mountings were something they had not seen before. The next FFRR they do will be a lot quicker.

I removed the rack yesterday cos the missus says it spoils the car, and I wanted to check the noise levels. There is very little noise, but it could also be that the RR is extremely quiet anyway - ie. lots of insulation.
I will fit again before we depart for Moz next month. Because of the brackets (and the winch in my garage) it is REALLY easy to remove. Took me less than 10 minutes.

Thanks to Richard and his team at Big Country
