Had a look at my struts some weeks ago when I first spotted this post. They were fine then but had another look this morning and the right hand one has worked loose by a couple of turns looks like. I'll get a spanner on it tonight before things get worse.

Since the post exists, I check it once a week and so far it's OK.

My car is now close to 4,000 km and no problem at all. Fingers crossed Wink

I have a theory as to why this is happening and why it seems to affect only the right hand strut ball joint.

I think that as the grease in the joint gradually disappears, the friction applied to the ball increases and this friction is applied mainly when the tailgate is being lifted because of the weight.

As the tailgate opens, the right hand strut rotates anticlockwise round the righthand ball and if the friction is enough to overcome the torque, the ball will loosen.

Won't happen on the other side as it is being tightened as the tailgate opens so provided the friction doesn't increase to a point where it could overtighten and shear off the ball......!

try some non locking loctite to the thread and a periodic greasing.

tailgate struts

many thanks for the advice. I found this site in the landrover magazine. The disco is my 3rd landrover over last 8 years. A great site and one I shall visit a lot.

I checked my tailgate struts this morning after reading the article last night. Both are okay. I have a friend who also has one so I will pass on the advice to him on Monday.

Regards,

Trevor

Hi Trevor, could I ask you which magazine it was, and was it in reference to the tailgate struts or DISCO3 in general? 8)

Oh and welcome to DISCO3 Very Happy

Its on P.146 of Junes LRM, 'Objects of Desire' article. Not sure if this is the one Trevor saw though.

Assumed you knew about it!

I had to replace the right hand brake lamp bulb today, and thought I would see a big ugly welded patch behind the lamp unit where they repaired my strut, but no! nothing at all to see.

Either the patch is perfectly welded and ground down so as to be perfectly invisible, or there is another unpublished method of repair.

Wierd!

If the captive nut breaks off, couldn't you just use a rivetnut? Like the ones on the Defenders.

Think a rivnut wouldn't last long, the shear force would cause it to deform the panel

I mentioned the tail gate strut problem to my local bodyshop when I booked my car in to have its passenger front door repainted. They told me they have had a few of these to do but have found by removing some of the interior trim they can do the repair without having to cut a hole for access.

Right hand one on mine was loose on collection (1 year old), noticed it when viewing it at the dealers. Fixed now. Smile
