Camper trailer electrical connection

Before I hire a camper trailer, can anyone advise me whether the electrical connection on my MY07 D3 needs anything special to work normally?

Camper Trailer hire

Provided trailer is wired to 7 pin standard nothing required. I have 4 campers and non have issues with standard LR plug.

Questions to ask
Does camper have electric brakes?? IF so controller is required
Do you need to supply 12 volts to camper batteries? If so Anderson plug is preferred method.
Does camper have LED tails lights? If so an adapter is required

Why do I have 4 ? Well I hire them out, but am based in Geelong

Controller for electrice brakes

What is the controller for? Is the camper trailer hire place likely supply it with the trailer?

Controller

If the camper has elecric brakes then it has to be activated by the vehicles brakes ( in fact the tail lights send a signal to the controller)

Most hire campers either have NO brakes or one of the overide brake systems that need no controller.

With electric brakes the controller send the correct amount of current to the brakes. Look up TEKONSHA.

However If you have already arranged to hire I think thay would have told you of the requirement.

NSW regulations for electric brakes require the controller to be fitted within reach of the driver.

Hopefully none of this will matter for you as hopefully the camper will have overide brakes

I hired a Campomatic from Challenge campers in Rydalmere and they had adapters for D3. The guy that runs the franchise owns a D3.
They have different models to choose from Campomatic TrakShak and Challenge worth a call.

The LED trailer light adaptor is the key - you can get them on the net. Many trailers have them now,
cheers

As a matter of interest, I have never towed with my D3, and do not have any connectors or adapters that came with the car. Is there a generic adapter needed to tow trailers?

Thanks,
Pierre

Standard wiring

Standard Round 7 pin Socket (Black one RHS) Just requires a standard 7 Pin plug on the trailer. Typically without brakes only 5 are used Blinkers (2) Tail lights 1Brakes Lights 1 and earth 1.

The other 2 are for electric trailer brakes ans Auxillary power to trailer.

If you need to put a new plug on the trailer I recomend the metal plugs from NARVA. (Wiring Diag is on packet)

Anderson Plug

I take it the black round seven pin connector on D3 does not have a feed for the 12v lights on a caravan. Can you get an adaptor for the anderson plug so it fits onto a flat 7 pin trailer plug.

Mistake

I ment the white round plug at rear of the D3 not the anderson plug.

Hi,

Can anyone please tell me where these 'LED modulator adaptors' can be found? I just picked up a bike trailer with LED lights and have indicators pulsating like a disco even though multi meter says no current flowing through to trailer and keys out of ignition!!!! I have contacted dealer who quotes $325. I was hoping there are other options to correct this issue with the LED trailer lights.

Many thanks.

Thanks Black, I will follow that up. I found it interesting today that a reasonably large Adelaide trailer manufacturer had not heard of the LED/LR issue and was ringing around other auto electricians seeking an answer to the pulsating trailer indicators.
