Landrover Roadside Assistance

I have just received a renewal notice for my Landrover Assist policy(I am out of warranty) and decided to check out the actual policy for Landrover Assist. Just in case there was a change I asked Landrover Assist for and received a copy of the policy.

The wording of the document contained one paragraph that really caused alarm bells to ring>>>> Censored Censored Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Towing Limitations

Towing will only be provided for eligible vehicles weighting less than 2,500 Kg at the time of breakdown. Vehicles exceeding this limitation will be offered towing at the driver’s expense.

Note the weight limit. Mad Mad

How can this be when the basic weight for the Discovery 3 TDV6 as per the Owner's Handbook is 2,494 - 2718 kg and the Maximum Gross weight 3,180 - 3230 kg.? With just basic necessities when travelling the weight would be approximately 3,000 kg.

I have responded to Landrover and they told me to contact their normal assist number for assistance about the policy. I have done this and have been given a bit of a run around with several people but now one kind sole has indicated that he will follow it up and let me know. I was also informed that no LR D3 has ever been refused towing for weight. This may be so, but what if the letter of the document is enforced. No LR D3 would be eligible.

I have also contacted NRMA and their weight limit is 3,500 kg for the Premium Care package. Seeing we are normally assisted by NRMA or other sister organisations you would assume that 3,500 kg would be OK.

I am waiting for their reply. Will keep you advised.

I rember that coming up when I bought mine, thought they would have changed mine. Misleading to sell a vehicle with an assistance package that does not offer what it says. Rolling Eyes

Hmm... I thought that LR Roadside Assistance was just NRMA Premium Care? All the (way too many) times I have used it, the people on the phone have not hidden the fact they were NRMA Premium Care employees. This was especially the case when the first HPFP died and tried to drown the turbo. They wanted to tow me to Dubbo rather than my dealer, as it was LR's policy - not theirs.

I might check what the difference is between these two choices, as mine is now due for renewal.

Cheers,
Rob

Will Land Rover have a vehicle recovered from its stranded location or must it find its way to a road? There aren't many 4wd recovery vehicles around the place and conventional flatbeds and tow trucks can experience major problems when negotiating tight corners and steep inclines, even on gravel roads and tracks. The final decision on whether to recover a stranded machine lies with the local towing contractor.

Also check that the vehicle will be taken to your dealer of choice and not just to the nearest Land Rover dealer.

Regards,

Bunta

No reply from Landrover Assist. Rang again two days ago and was informed that they are still working on it and waiting for a response from ??????? re the weight limit.

Waiting, waiting. Evil or Very Mad Twisted Evil

In the meantime i am looking at the NRMA Premium but there are a couple of things in it that worry me i.e. 100 km towing limit in remote areas. Not much chop in outback areas Censored

Maybe if a few others rang Landrover Roadside Assistance - Customer Service and asked the same question re weights we may get an answer quicker - then again I may be expecting too much.

Landrover Roadside Assistance.

Recently I had to phone L/R Assist as was in need of towing to the nearest dealer. We were towing a van and was told that they would only transport the vehicle and not the van. Luckily we also had NRMA Premium Care and they were excellent. No dramas about transporting both and also covered accommodation costs. L/R Assist is now run by a non L/R aligned (read Insurance) company called Mondial. L/R NON ASSIST![/b]

Iraq 2010 Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6 HSE Auto Ipanema SandDiscovery 4

In January 2008 I was on the dirt road between Tilpa and Wilcannia, parallel to the Darling River in my old D3 V8. The rear park brake decided to drag and ended up seizing up, catching fire (!) and bringing our return to Perth to a sudden halt. Since we were on a named road, LR Assist took the loaded D3 and our 1 Tonne camp trailer (towed behind the recovery vehicle) to the nearest dealership (Dubbo, 550 km away), paid for 2 nights in a motel, and 2 days of a rental car. I had paid for the premium cover through RACWA (probably same as NRMA premium care) but found out that if interstate, the "agreement" between the auto clubs is that they would only pay for a tow to the nearest workshop (Wilcannia, which I somehow wouldn't want touching the D3). This is a trap to be aware of. While LA Assist didn't pay for the Dubbo-Sydney-Perth flights for 5 of us, and 10 weeks later the return flights for 2 of us to pick up the D3, I thought it was pretty good cover and was delighted with how LR Assist got us safely through Wilcannia!

I would suggest that if LR Assist were contacted for a long-distance tow, you ask them the name of the towing contractor being used. Then have a friendly chat with the towing contractor and tell him your situation. At worst, it may require a bit extra $$ to pay for towing a trailer (or extra load).

Interesting that I just rang NRMA to register an additional vehicle that was just out of its executive road service cover provided from its purchase some years ago.
The NRMA operator noticed that I had an LR3 on Classic cover and said, you are aware that at 2.7 tonnes you may be charged for towing if required outside of the metro area of Sydney. We only cover up to 2.5 tonnes.
Note that this was an unsolicited comment from an NRMA operator.
Provided this feedback out of interest.
I have kept my NRMA classic cover on the LR3 and will argue if I have an issue if ever required.

Hi barry,
Just because you argue, it doesn't mean that you will win.

Considering some of the areas I go, I have the premium cover for peace of mind.

Best Wishes,
Peter

Hi Peter,

Premium cover is no doubt the solution although the NRMA operator didn't offer it to me as a solution, which is surprising.

I have LR Assist (as part of my extended warranty) and i also pay for RACQ Ultra Care. If one refused to tow me, I'd call the other and get them to carry half each......

Mind you if you see my Key Fob thread you'll see the RACQ Ultra Care let me down the one time I've called to use it in 10 years....

Hi DanW,

LR Assist and BMW Executive care both use the NRMA in NSW.
Only had to use LR Assist once with a flat battery on the LR3 and they summoned the NRMA to fix the problem.
Probably overkill to have LR Assist and the RACQ.
