Help - Urgent advice on fuel pump belt replacement

Hi

I have an independent LR mechanic with my car in pieces as I type. He's changing the fuel pump belt - but has spent 2 hrs trying to get it back on again.

Says he's done them before and not had a major problem - but he's really struggling. Are there any tips or tricks? I need my car back together!!

Any suggestions anyone?

Use a mirror and a good light!

Thanks!

His problem seems to be getting the new belt onto the pulleys...

He's trying to do it by feel rather than sight. Is there an easy way to access it? He's reaching down from on top of the engine.

Which bit needs the light / mirror? He's got the new tensioner on and locked.

IIRC, belt on first, then tensioner - no way can it be done by feel alone on a first or second try.... get an old door mirror and a good light on the job!

Has anyone actually done this?

How hard was it?

Thanks. Apparently he's already tried that way too...

Now looking at taking a few more bits off to get better access.

Or get someone with smaller hands & better eyes? I've done three of these and won't be doing any more due to the amount of trim-rash Rolling Eyes Dealers do 'em all the time - particularly during the current P008 recall - and generally delegate to those with female sized hands Laughing

TFC - is there any difference in size for the belt and HPFP between the EURO III and EURO IV engines?

I know that they are different parts, but could it be that they are physically different and that trying to fit EURO IV parts onto ac's 2005 D3 would cause this much grief?

Just a wild guess Embarassed

Thanks for the comments guys.

Apparently, it's the same belt - unless anyone knows better?

Still struggling...

Well there's 3 different part numbers for the kits... dunno if there's any physical differences as i've always ordered the one based upon the VIN of the vehicle

Ahhh...

Apparently... it is not the same belt! The one he's been trying to fit is 2 cm too small....

Correct one being picked up tomorrow... Big lesson learned.
