After an absence of two years from LR, its time to get back in the game with a D4. In the past month I have driven both the 2.7 and the 3.0 and around town have found not a huge difference in stop start traffic. The most notable would be the much more noticable lag of the 3L (this may have just been the test car) but it was a much more pronounced wait.. wait .. wait, ah theres the power. On the open road as every one has pointed out there is no comparison - 3L all the way. The test drives have included some tight windy up and down sections through the Adelaide Hills which highlights how much better the D4 handles than a D3. Substantially less body roll.
The real issue I have with the 3.0 and why I have not yet purchased is the issue with 19" tyres. Which ever way you look at it, this is a serious liability off road. Some will say we can possibly get a GMax 18". I had the 17" version on my D3 (see GMAX website the disco photo is my D3) and it is a good rim. but 18" tyres are still scarce and pulling into Birdsville and even asking for 18's is going to cost you both some serious dosh and time. 17's are now pretty common and still the best bet off road for availability and they cost a substantially lot less than 18's, little own the cost of a 19 if you damage one.
My thinking at present is to go the 2.7, spec as close as possible to an SE and get the second set of 17s from those upgrading to a 3.0.
My question for the aftermarket guys is then. What chip/remap/tune is available for the D4 2.7 to make me feel better that I haven't totally missed out on the 3.0 power. 2005 TDV6 SE gone

SMK I'd be very suprised if the Autologic upgrade isnt available for the 2.7l D4; its the same engine as the D3 and plenty of us have had the "remap" done on our D3's. In Adelaide - I think http://www.sovereignauto.com.au/?id=range can do the remap (Autologic); I paid $1000 plus GST in Perth at an independent LR service centre, in 2008; well worth the money.
cheers

Do you *need* the chip?
The 2.7 isn't a rocketship, but it's not bad on power. --

Great until you add weight of ARB bar, winch, dual batteries, drawer system, 200l of diesel..........etc etc....then its nice to have a few extra KW's!! WRT 18" rims - the Prado and LC200 now come with 265/60/18 and 285/60/18 rubber, so there is bound to be an increase in the number of tyre vendors supplying these sizes. And there is quite a bit around even now - PM me if you want a spreadsheet of what's available.
Of course, that's for the city areas. Out bush, well, I guess you have to carry your own carcases and fit them on-site.

Chris,
Thanks for the info on Soverign Auto. Like you, I moved to Adelaide last year and am more familiar with the Perth stealers etc. Have you had your car serviced there. Always nice to have an alternative. I have seen a lot of negative press about the Adelaide dealer, I get my Volvo serviced there and have found it ok but not convinced, especially after the last service when it felt like it had less power. To date I have resisted sending my wifes Golf GT there.
Gordon I agree that there are 18's around but still concerned on availability and also what compromises may be made on an 18" rim to fit over the brakes.
As an added comment the ride on the 18's is so much better than the 19s on the rough choppy roads in Adelaide. I would seriously consider ruinning 17s permanently to improve ride on these roads. See thread above with comments from GraemeS. I concur, the 2.7 felt better on road with the higher profile tyres. My XC90 is the V8 sport version and runs stiffer suspension and 255/50/19 PZeros, the ride is harsh on the country roads. A higher profile tyre is definitely the way to go on these short of roads.

So there's hope yet if only some 18s can be found that fit! Either that or see if 2.7 brakes can be engineered on the 3.0 then fit 17s or even D3 V8 brakes just happen to find their way on for 18s.

Hi SMK
If you consider the 2.7 then a TorqTune box might be the answer for you. See my post and experience with the system
