What should I be aware of in fixing the roof? |
|
Well... following the hail storm damage topic.
I have called a LR dealer arrange a quote to repair dents on roof and bonnet. However, they refused to make an estimate as they don't think the job will to given to them, as their experience said my insurer does not have a fair choice of repairers policy.
I have called my insurance company and they will cover fix with their preferred repairers... however, I have concerns their work may not be desirable. I also made an appointment with a reputable panel shop who is willing to deal with my insurer, but they are busy and won't be able to assess till late next week. Plus no guarantee they will get a fair go too.... But I can wait!
Guess I will have to be very careful and keep an eye on the work.
My question will be 1) what is the method to fix roof dents the proper way? 2) what are the details that I should pay attention to? 3) Any recommendation or suggestions on dealing with insurance companies?
thank you for any tips!
Andy

Hi Andy,
sorry to hear about your roof, as to dealing with the insurance Co. - get everything in writing and try to establish contact with the same person everytime (if possible) you get less of a run-around that way. I don't know your location but I have used "Carpenters bodyworks" in Heidelberg for my VW - they do very good work and seem to get a lot of "up-market" cars there....may be worth a try ?
I'm sure someone else on this forum will be able to give you advise on what to look out for re the actual repairs.
Good luck.

I am here in Sydney, and my Subaru Outback got caught in a hailstorm (with me in it) when it was only 3 weeks new, and it got a wide variety of dents in the roof and bonnet.
I searched for "Paintless Dent Removal" and I gave Elite Dent Removal & Rust Proofing a go and it was <$600 (the equivalent insurance excess). He did an awesome job in a couple of hours - I'm fussy and you really couldn't tell that there had been damage.
He told me he used to be a panel beater, and panel beaters often outsource these types of work to him. He had several very long probes that he put between the trim and the metal, and he basically massages the dent out. There was also this tool where he sticks a little thing to the centre of the dent, then has a another tool that attaches to the aforementioned "thing" to give it a good yank. The equivalent of hammering it out. He also sets up flouro lights from several angles to ensure he can see all the dents.
I would definitely use him again, and recommended him to another friend who was really happy with the result as well.
Maybe you can find something like this in Melbourne. Suzuki Vitara 3dr
Landrover Freelander 1.8 3dr
Subaru Outback 2.5
Landrover Discovery 4 3.0 SE

Looks like everyone is using the same method to repair the dents.
I went to investigate a panel shop my insurer recommended, I pretended as a regular customer looking for advice.
The shop looked big, clean and appear it has been extended recently, with 10-15 cars waiting inside the shop. The gentleman appeared friendly and said the insurance company has sent 2 specialist to repair the dented cars as they have so many coming in, then he showed me how they would repair dented roof. Before leaving, he identified himself as the owner, an English man and will look after the Land Rovers.
So far so good... will have an assessment with them tomorrow. My estimate is that around 50 dents on the bonnet and 100-150 dents on the roof.
Update tomorrow~

I was also told by the guy who did mine that there are some specialists who travel the world following the storm seasons, and especially any reports of big hail damage. Apparently they can afford to work 6 months and break 6 months. Nice. Suzuki Vitara 3dr
Landrover Freelander 1.8 3dr

In UK 'smart repair' and 'dentmaster' type repair is common. We used them all the time on finished Aston Martins and as said the finished result really is un-noticeable, even if pointed out to you where they did the repair.
It's time consuming though and, as mentioned, utilises plenty of weirdly shaped metal rods to 'smooth' out the dents from the underside with little, if any, trim removal.
I guess the 'bodge job' way would be to use body filler and a spray job with all the issues that can bring. Sounds like you've found yourself a good place

The dent repairers are indeed those who travel around the world to repair dents on cars!
They look professional and the work is guaranteed for life. Now just have to wait for them to find a time as sooo many cars are coming in....
