Go and check your lower tailgate bolts ..NOW !!

Hanging off the end of the tailgate changing into my Zamberlans, I happened to glance down and noticed the bolt securing the RH side of the tailgate supporting cable was very loose and nearly out of its socket. Evil or Very Mad
Now I know there was a chap called 'Blind Les' [or something similar] who worked on the rear offside of the D3 production line.
This man was responsible for the bolt on the upper tailgate gas strut working loose.
Now seems this one has just caught up with him.
So go and check your lower tailgate bolts now !
LH [nearside] is all ok btw.

Same with my tailgate clip but on offside. Retaining clip worked loose.

RH side [the problem side] is the Offside.
Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

I think he was the only guy on the production line with a 13mm spanner at the time. Obviously, he'd only got the left handed version Thumbs Up

Thanks for the tip, I'll go take a look.

Am I right in thinking that as long as they are not too loose they can be tightened from the external nut?

Thanks

there is only the external nut, the bodyside is threaded.

Just checked mine. Hanging on by a thread on the RHS. Fine on the left.

Only picked the car up last week. Thanks to the forum I checked the struts, and sure enough the RHS was just hanging on. Dealer was fortunately able to tighten it - would have been interesting if the captive bolt had failed...

Neither they or I thought to check the lower tailgate at the time though! So, thanks again to forum and OP.

Judging by the number of people who have had snapped actuator cables the bolts have probably been off and on post production for many.
