maybe this is why there is a delay in providing a fix, because they cant reproduce the fault.

X1/9 that is an exact replica of the fault with mine. The MPG when I got it was hi 20's or even low 30's, that was October/November. Then Dec/Jan the MpG started to drop off, down to an average of low 20's. Lots of smoke was observed when accelerating, this is often worse when the car has stood for a while after being drien, or if the car has been driven at a steady speed for a distance eg 40 or 50 mph, if I then accelerate BIG cloud of blue smoke.
New EGR valve fitted in March as they thought his caused the issue, there was a slight improvment of MPG but not back to original. It is intresting that a lot of people are also complaining about the mpg they are nt getting from their D4.
Mine does not burn huge amounts of oil with the exception of two weeks back in June/July when it was using a lot, this stopped just as quick as it started.
Car went back to dealers for first service Friday, they are very fustrated with LR lack of responce, they also agree that LR should take a car and strip to find fault. Intrestingly since the service the MPG does seem better than before!!!!!!!!!!! Have only covered about 100 miles so it is a little early to say.
Intrestingly I would not have been aware initially as smoke was not that obvious to start with. It was only following comments from friends that I started using the rear camera (surround cameras) to see what was happening. I then observed the smoke, unfortunatley I do not need the cameras now, it can been seen via the mirrors.
Other D4 owners try to replecate the driving conditions and then get some one to follow you to see what yours does, there appears to be a growing number of people out there with the same issue.

Does anyone have names, addresses or e mails for LR managment or Tata managment as LR customer services are worse than useless and will not return calls to myself or dealers.

Hi Russell, mine has also had its first service in the last month and I have also noticed a slight increase in MPG, but it is not back anywhere near to what I was getting before I noticed the blue smoke.
I agree with your comments on oil consumption, mine only used about a litre in 14500 miles up until it was changed at the service.
My dealer has told me that Land Rover do know what is causing the fault but they don't know how they can rectify it as yet!

One of the motoring magazines is running a long term D4 as a test car. They are aware of the issues with the D4 and RRS and are now asking questions of LR about why they are taking so long to fix.

hi there,sounds like you have a problem with your secondary turbo? known issue! a permenant fix will be available around end of october. this will only affect engine that drive around town and low revved vehicles.the problem is a build up of oil in the secondary turbo pipes which only become active above 3,000 rpm! go to you stealer and get the pipes drained and the smoke will go away for about 6 weeks of normal milage, then get the mod done when it is released. 8)

Could be like the sticking turbo vane issue on the D3. software fix to exercise the vanes to stop them getting stuck. I assume they will be trying software fix first to see if it works.

See the third picture in my first post for what happens when the dealer has done the clean-out. And that was hours after it was done. Proof it doesn't work! It's been done twice now and neither time has had any effect. And my car does serious motorway miles too, and yet I still have the problem. Yes, LR say a fix is coming for the end of October and I sincerely hope it arrives.

I hasten to add a fix was also coming for late August, and never arrived. Hence certain D4 owners such as myself are so annoyed at this whole issue. But LR say late-October, so we'll keep our fingers crossed it's second time lucky.

This may be a silly question but has anyone checked that the all the Valve stem seals have been installed?
This is the exact sympton of missing, damaged or worm seals on the valves. You dont loose power but you do loose oil and in particular when you've been idling for a while! Of couse you will still have full compression the valve seals stop an excess of oil running down the stem and hence the smoke .
It wouldnt be the first time that components have been missed from and engine build.
I deal with car plants all the time selling sensors to stop just this type of build mishap.
Just a thought and easy to check with a flexible fibre camera or lift the rocker covers.

I had a smoking D4 as well. It had burnt about 250ml of oil in a fairly short time.

The dealer investigated and found oil in the second turbo. They say the fault was a blocked oil return line causing oil to build up in the turbo.

Bit a trawl of GTR this evening reveals a fix is enroute for this issue.

Both software and a physical adaptation in two stages, software first then fitting a valve into an air bleed pipe between the engine air intake and the secondary turbo. Software will keep the turbos in bi-mode, even when creeping around in traffic.

No further secondary turbo replacements for this issue are being accepted apparently.

Whilst obviously a design fault, the issue is driving style induced.
