V8 Brake upgrade
Hi All
Just thought I would share this with everybody I did a V8 brake conversion to my D3 Yesterday and what a difference it stops like you wouldnt believe.
The conversion consists of larger carriers,discs and yellow stuff brake pads the calipers are the same on the 2.7 as they are on the V8.
I also had a very interesting conversation with the technical department at EBC and was told not to use green stuff pads on this vehicle as it is too heavy for these pads and that the D3 should run yellow stuff because of the weight the yellow stuff pads are actually marked SUV/Truck they werent cheap but the difference was amazing.
Im still running everything in so will update as soon as they are run in.

Interesting that you felt the need to destroy the design brake balance... the standard discs have a high iron content, EBC seem to have a high 'scrap-iron' content, i've rarely seen the EBC discs last more than two sets of pads, in contrast, my D3 is on it's fourth set of pads, original discs at 109k and it still stops as well as it did as new

I didnt use the the EBC Discs I was advised not to as they wouldnt make any difference I used genuine LR Discs with LR Carriers but Yellow stuff pads.
As for destroying the brake balance what a load of tosh they are the same brakes as whats on all D3s the surfaces are exactly the same it is only the diameter of the disc circumference that was changed on the V8 which I would have thought you would have knowen that

I wouldn't have thought that having an extra few mm of disc would make that much of a difference to be honest? The biggest noticeable change would be in using the Brembo multi-pot calipers on the front which is something that I want to do in the future.

I'd be careful as the V8 disco3 runs larger discs on the front and rear, and you have just changed the front to V8 and this may upset the braking balance as TFC said.
I think the disc sizes are
TDV6 17" front and rear
V8 18" front and rear
Brembo's 19" front and 18" rear, but obviously this is only on the RRS.
V6 rear disc SDB000636 are 325mm in diameter the V8 rear disc (Brembo fiited front) SDB000646 are 350mm in Diameter.
I think the Supacharged RRS has a bigger pad width, but stays within the 350 od, consequently has a bigger pad.

My local indie LR supplier advised me that RRFF supercharged pads and discs will set you back £550 for a set of 4
Is that right ??
(compared to a set of D3 ones at around £200 for 4)Never get mad - get even !!
06 D3 now gone to family member and still going strong at 265k

Hi Guys
I dont mean to be forward but read my bloody post properly I do this sort of thing for a living and I actually know what Im doing I have completely upgraded the brakes all round , not half a job as has been suggested
I have used genuine LR parts from the V8 the only thing I havnt used is the pads because I wanted more bite and stopping power so used Truck /SUV Yellow stuff pads as advised by the technical dept at EBC.
The V8 uses the same calipers as the V6 the only difference is the carriers and the discs and For the second time you will not upset the brake balance as all the parts including the servo are the same on all D3's the only difference between a V6 & a V8 are the engines but you will need the 18 or 19 inch wheels mine is an HSE so has the 19's
LR upgraded the V8's brakes because of its speed ability and for the extra weight of the V8 engine as the RRS supercharged version gets the Brembos to help it stop better.
I did think about the Brembo calipers but they are £500 pounds each new so I havnt bothered with those, it was a hell of a lot cheaper to do the V8 conversion
If any one wants all the part numbers to do the conversion let me know and I will post them up

I am going to carry out this conversion and wondered if the rear brakes on the V8 were different ?
I have also looked into the Brembo conversion but i feel this is too much overkill for me,
I do think the stamdard brakes are lacking bite and whilst i am no engineer or specialist i know when the back of the car in front looms up much quicker than it should its time to make some modifications,
Or drive with a bigger gap between you and the car in front
Actually, I drove a 308 the other week - its got a heads up display, which includes a popup when you are less than 2seconds from the vehicle in front - and goes mental when it gets to 1sec! Its surprising how far away 2seconds is!Mark.

without the emotion, I did just the front V8 disc upgrade on my old D3 when it needed new discs, and to be honest, it felt a lot better, but then it would, as the old discs and pads were knackered, so anything would have felt better. I never found or had any issue with brake balance, or any sort of antics even when braking hard in the wet. The only difference I could tell was when I jumped back into a standard D3, and mine did feel more responsive when pressing the brake pedal.

I was under the impression that most cars only do about 5% of their braking via the rear brakes. In addition aren't they auto bias via a control valve?
The extra few mm is useful because of the torque applied so a small change there is multiplied up when it comes to the effect it has. Pad surface area and swept volume (so servo ratio) are also major factors in efficiency and cooling, but it looks like neither come into play here 56 HSE
