I've had the same problem - stripped it down and used a cotton bud to clean the lense. Re-built and it was ok for 6 months. Then the same problem and so the same fix.
This has happened again (probably after six months), so I will take it out and give it another clean.
I also use an FM transmitter but because the FM channels are so clogged you can get interference if you go from region to region so its not ideal - but ok if you find an empty frequency and only drive locally.
I now have a Parrot and just plug the ipod into that - might even go for a usb drive which can also be plugged in.
I just like having the CD working as its quick to drop a cd in so will give it another clean.

Definitely SOLVED !! This "thingy" works great and sound quality and volume seems as good as CDs. Highly reccommended. Benefit is you can get masses of CDs on one Flash drive - I really am dragging myself into the 21st century - with a little help from forum friends.
