It is a friction fit into the space between the air vents then ?

Yes, but you could bolt, screw, glue, whatever, to the H trim at either side to make it a truly permanent fix. I only did the job a few hours ago so it is still at beta phase.

When I have finished painting I expect that there will be three self tappers or thin nuts and bolts joining the surround to the vent at each side.

When you remove the H trim the nav will come too. Alternatively it would be easy to screw into cubby - but damaging.

VERY good point Laughing just been and checked mate, as you have Garmin I assume that you have an equally good speaker. I cannot notice any real difference to be honest (my nav has always been in the cubby). My volume is on 60% and I could still hear it fine. I cranked it up to 100% and found that too obtrusive. However, I never have my music that loud when I need to rely upon navigation (a winning point for my old proper factory D3 nav that interupts the music SN Laughing )

I would not want to be slated for someone fitting up and finding they cant hear their nav, but I find no real difference.

It is just a thin piece of plastic after all.

I will do some snaps tommorow of the story so far, been busy with work. The spare trims and surround all in 5 coats of Brunel now and that colour is sexy. I need to do the laquer but I will google the most effective DIY method first.

That's what I have done. Extended the power cable with mini-b usb extension cable. Also got a very long cable to connect to the camera at the back. Just trying to sort OBD connector, don't know what to do with it yet, unscrew it and connect ecoroute or just extend it and place it somewhere else Rolling Eyes

Hey guys! Good to see that you have got going. Some good ideas on how to better to sort cabling / antennae etc Thumbs Up

Rubbed down and plastic primed some spare tatty trim, managed to level off the bottom centre of the new surround too with not much effort.

5 Coats of Brunel and two finger marks, Laquer to follow

The trims are getting rubbed down with 1500 grit tonight then a 6th and final Brunel coat (I have learnt in the past to do very light coats for a good finish). Left for 24hrs, then another rub and 2 coats of nice shiney laquer.

Thinking the better idea would be paint the top portion black before laquer???

The opposite of the LR piano black job where the top is silver?
