| MIGRATION TO OZ Help : 457 or ENS S/121 ? |

Hello mates
I am seriously considering a position in OZ.
I have intensively searched information through the web and contacted migration agents.
Now I am looking for serious first hand experience.
Did some of you moved using a 457 or an ENS S/121?
I would tend to go with the ENS as I could stay longer but again am not aware if this long term visa lowers my chance to get the visa compared to a 457 (2 to 4 years working Visa that could lead to a 121)
Anyway, first hand experience very appreciated.

I went through the 457 route and then the company sponsored me permanent after 2 years, the hassle being that you have to go through all the police, medicals, Skills assessment again...
As a permanent resident you also get the ability to move jobs, on a 457 if you are fired, you literally have a very short period of time to find another sponsor, or pack up and leave

Indeed, just 28 days then "Au Revoir"...
Should the company accept the 121, I would go for it right away. if not I will follow the same route you did, but reckon it is quite a waste of time an money.
Could you tell me why you did not go for a 457 in the first place ?
Also, how long did it take from the first documents filling to the actual Visa validation ? did you go through an agent ?

the company decided on 457 in order to move me quicker across to OZ, the whole process took about 3 months, some of that down to me actually being away and not being available for Medicals etc.. I still wished i had save the hassle and gone Permanent straight away, but the company did not mention that was an option at the time.
I could have stayed on the 457 but i was concerned about being totally locked into a company that i would have never gladly chosen to work for in the UK...or who could dismiss me at a whim and i would have had to find my own way back to the UK (no repatriation fees would be considered by them). Some good points on a 457, you get LAFA, living away from home allowance, which means if your rent, this can be salary sacrificed (paid before tax)..

I hope the money's damn good , because you'll need some compensation for the overpriced
housing and utterly rubbish food. These are the two aspects of Oz that really  me off.

Food is damned good here.
You may have to develop a liking for Asian influenced dishes and fresh fish though.

I'm often back , and I'd give my right arm for an Asda and a Tesco here .
Just about all fresh veg/fruit is Oz grown and often poor . The EU and superb
distribution services has made a mammoth improvement to UK supermarkets
over the last 10 years. Don't expect any baked lines fit to eat either. You're in
for interesting experiences  ....... and then there's the exchange rates 
No doubt you've spent some time on Realestate.com.au . Prices are crazy here.
After every episode of Escape to the Country ( BBC2 for UK ) my wife checks
out the current prices/exchange rates and goes mad . We know many who
won't come here because of the housing costs . If you're not getting a good
climate change , I'd think long and hard , and then do a proper recky .

fruit, well most of us grow our own. grows like wildfire and tastes pretty damn good to me.
I was there in 08 and it was very,very expensive in the UK.
I dont pay to park nor to breathe air and fuel is less than half what the UK pays.
I own a few properties so I dont know where your coming from with realestate  and Im a sparky.
supermarkets in the UK (the ones I saw ) are tiny and you have to visit more than one store to get your produce.

not much of a point to compare on Neil to be honest (by the way ASDA is now Walmart, more a "stack m high" tat and tack than a supermarket nowadays) , i was back in October to farewell my father, my home town was a "affluent" commuter town in the south east when i left 6 years ago, now it is very depressing to say the least, boarded up shops in the high street, major cuts to services etc.. all my mates saying they wished they had off down under when we did.. and apparently that is pretty much the norm i have been told
Not rushing back there soon i can tell you, Petrol Prices through the roof, Pubs in decline, pretty much sums it up.. another Pommie from the darkside
