Headlight bulbs keep blowing |
|
I seem to be going through replacement bulbs at a rapid rate in the last 3 weeks I have gone through 4 and up to now have been replacing at least one headlight bulb every 5 or 6 weeks. The last two occasions that the bulbs have gone they have both blown at the same time. Tonight I started up as normal, headlights on no bother and as I headed off down the street turned on the heated front screen and both bulbs went. Any suggestions what may be wrong greatly appreciated. 06 S, sticker, colour coded boot handle and sill guards added within 2 hours of getting it!!!

has it had xenons in the past installed, think somebody on here had issues due to the cars setup file had it set for xenons, they kept blowing halogen bulbs.
The file gets changed to stop flickering on the xenons on startup.

The honest answer is that I dont know if it had xenons in what would be the best way to find out as I got it from a dealer and am not sure if they would know. Thanks very much. 06 S, sticker, colour coded boot handle and sill guards added within 2 hours of getting it!!!

see if anyone near by has a MSV MV around, but if its from the dealer, I would take it back and let them sort it out.

Unfortunately did not get it from a local dealer and also they dont seem to be the best at after sales. Will see if they know if it had xenons in or if they can find out - is worth a try. 06 S, sticker, colour coded boot handle and sill guards added within 2 hours of getting it!!!

To me it does not sound like the problem as I would expect the bulbs to blow when the lights were first turned onif it had had xenons fitted .
The other cause that may be well away from the mark is the alternator regulator on its way out so it is over charging particularly under an increased demand situation like putting the screen on.

Was me with the same problem. Get the CCF updated for non-xenon setup and you will be cured, well, I was!

It does blow them within the fisrt few minutes of the engine being started as tonight I started up headlights on and then as I went to pull away turned on the screen and the went. I can not remember if they have gone previously when I have turned anything else on as they have blown as I turn the lights on. 06 S, sticker, colour coded boot handle and sill guards added within 2 hours of getting it!!!

Hi Andy
I'm sure that the ex-xenon advice is correct. However if you look under the bonnet at the top part of the headlight unit you will see not only a part number but also a date. This should be around the same as say the label on the seat belts. If the date on the light units is not there or has been obliterated I would be very suspicious. My point is that if the lamps have been changed then I'd be thinking about having a serious chat with the dealer who supplied your car.

Well the dealer I got my Disco from does not seem at all interested in trying to help out and has passed the buck. The salesman claims that they have no details of the previous owner as they bought it from a dealer who had the Disco in as a part ex so am at square one to find out if it had Xenons fitted in it previously. 06 S, sticker, colour coded boot handle and sill guards added within 2 hours of getting it!!!

Owners change headlamps on D3's for many reasons - the date may or may not tally up - If I put xenons on I would get the CCF updated and keep the Halogens for when I sell the D3. So if you looke dthe date on the lamps would tally - but the CCF may not be set to Halogens if I hadn't got round to getting it changed back. Sales staff have probably never heard of a CCF file - I asked at Stratones for advice before I found the forum and they just looked at me like I was stupid, and then tried to sell me LR bulbs! (which can make a difference, but it bugged me that they simply went straight for a sale!)

I must admit that thus far I have got bulbs from Halfords as I have never had a problem with them in previous cars. I have not had a chance to look at the dates on the headlights but when I spoke to the Salesman I may as well have spoken Russian as even when I asked if he could find out if it had Xenon headlights in he did not even know what Xenon headlights are!! I had toyed with the idea of putting Xenons in before this happened but the cost has been putting me off with it being Christmas etc. 06 S, sticker, colour coded boot handle and sill guards added within 2 hours of getting it!!!
