Rear Diff Leak

Uh oh, looks like I have a pretty good leak on the left side output of my rear differential. Can this be repaired, meaning, can the seal be replaced pretty easily?

Yep, fairly easy fix.

But . . . according to the workshop proceedure a 'special tool' is required to remove the old oil seal Rolling Eyes

Maybe someone on here can confirm if it can be done 'diy' and without the LR special tool Whistle

Oil Seal part No (in UK) TZB500050

Getting it out is easy with a universal prying tool Whistle

Just need to press it in squarely. Thumbs Up

Yikes! Don't scare me Character. I've only owned my new baby for two weeks now...and had to drive away leaving it on the lift this evening. Big Cry

Hope to have the leak and new seal sorted in the next day or two. But wouldn't you know it, the new rubber mats and a couple of other items I ordered for the new ride are due to arrive tomorrow. Sad

I'm on EDGE!!! Censored

Oh well, guess I'll just settle back and look and enjoy my latest issue of Overland Journal this evening.

Anyone know what size the hex head plug is? In other words, what size of tool does it take to remove it?

if I recall its a square plug and a 1/2 inch racket fits - ie one that you would attached to a socket. If not then it could be an 8mm or 10mm Hex key

Thanx Duncan. I determined that it is actually a 14mm hex head. Try as I did, I couldn't get the 1/2 ratchet to fit in there, so I am off to a couple of shops this morning to see if I can find a 14mm hex head socket or allen wrench.

The fill plug is the 10mm hex head. At least on my '05.

I have changed rear seals 2 months ago. It is indeed 14mm hex bit for the draining plug. No special tool required for seals removal. 35bucks for the seals and new oil. Work was performed in 4 hours.

Yep, seal changed yesterday morning, but ran into a snag on the drain plug last evening. No parts store close by had the 14mm, so I had to push the pause button.

Quick trip to the Sears store this morning and on my lunch break I drained and re-filled both diff's. The rear went without incident. The front for some reason had pressure and the initial blast shot oil as far as the right wheel. Very interesting since just a couple of days ago I checked the breather cap to make sure all was well. It doesn't have the upgrade from the TSB, so I think I will print it off and take it with me when I go in to the dealer to pick up my new key and fob.

Last evening brought new tow cover and all new rubber mats. This evening I added the hood/bonnet deflector...all new fluids and filters...it's all coming together! Almost ready for a long road trip!

There should be no pressure like that. You should trace and clear or replace the breather vent line. There is also a new breather cap replacement by LR.

You cut off the old one, and slide the new one on. Pressure build up in the diff can cause the seals to blow out.

You can follow this thread on the breather cap update. http://disco3.co.uk/forum/topic75831.html

Thanx TLT. Yep, I had seen that info and it is what led me to take a look a couple of days ago to see if the new breather had already been fitted. No such luck. So I messed with the existing cap and heard the sound of slight pressure being released when I messed with the little cap. I thought I had freed it up and resolved any sticking that may have caused the pressure to build up...guess not. Rolling Eyes
