Help please! Disco 3 refuses to start - Big F - Fault codes
Hi all, looking for some help with my D3 refusing to start.
This is what's happened:
The car was booked in for annual service, MOT and investigation of parking brake fault (squealing module) so I was going to give it a wash the night before.
I tried to start it but battery was low and turning over was sluggish. It failed to start on its own but did readily when I jumped it off another car. I moved it into a suitable washing position but then absentmindedly turned it off.
I immediately tried to start it again and everything was dead. No lights on the dash, felt as if there was absolutely no power coming from the battery.
Hooked it up to the other car and the electrics came to life but no joy turning it over. Nothing at all, as if it was immobilised (not sure if an immobiliser allows the starter motor to run or not; my starter was not powering up).
I put a charger on it overnight and the same situation occurs.
The voltage on the secret menu was showing only 11.5v when not hooked up to the other car, so I put on a replacement battery, although I'm not 100% sure how that is different to jump leads onto a good one in another vehicle. Someone tried to explain it to me but I'm not sure I get it. Still nothing. All electrics come on but no attempt is made to turn the starter motor.
The voltage when hooked up to the running jumper car shows 13.5v. When I turn off the jumper car, the voltage drops to 11-11.5v
The voltage showing on the secret menu when the replacement battery was fitted still only showed 11.5v
I checked the voltage of the original battery and the replacement one and they showed 12.5v and 12.8v respectively, so it says to me that someting between the battery and the car's systems is wrong.
I have read of possible ECU damage, voltage monitor damage and other things related to jump starting in the old fashioned way (+ve to +ve and -ve to -ve terminals) although I'm at a loss to understand how any high voltage spike could occur doing that.
It has a big F on the dashboard and informs me that there is an engine fault and a transmission fault.
I also have a known HDC fault as my dog has trodden on the yellow button and it's stuck in the down position. I also have a known parking brake fault.
Can anyone shed any light on possible causes? I will list the huge amount of fault codes from my IID below. A lot of them seem completely spurious and are wrong as things like the speakers work but it says they don't. I am assuming that this is due to communication from the main ECU not happening.
If I have to get it recovered then I can do that, but I'd like to know if it's possibly anything simple that could be the root cause. I have read about brake switches causing a problem but it is the low voltage reading that I keep coming back to.
Thanks for reading this far.

I forgot to say, before I bought the IID tool, I did a hard reset by disconnecting the battery and connecting the cables to discharge the ECUs as read about on this forum.
Prior to that, I couldn't get it out of park. Doing the reset allowed me to get it out of park.2005 Disco 3 TDV6 SE Auto Bonatti Grey

Hi
Do u happen to have a multimeter plse as would first test the battery with the engine off
Then print out or email those fault codes to ur email , then clear everything and then do another scan to see what comes back
Then see if it will turn over and start , if not use ur multimeter to find a decent ground on the engine by going from the battery neg to the engine , then place a jump lead from that engine point to the battery neg
Plse see if that makes any difference in turning it over
Then do another scan to see if there are any more as that may help u identify what’s going on
Can of course advise u where the earths are around the vehicle if req after ensuring all the fuses are ok and battery is rearing a min of 12.6vdc with the engine off
It may be the battery u swapped over was ok but failed as soon as u tried to crank the engine if the battery was old
Hope that helps

Also to add if the gearbox thinks it’s not in park or neutral it won’t try to turn over , so need to ensure that corrected first
Plus extremely important a good battery is fitted otherwise it can cause havoc, need to see a min of 12.6 Vdc with the engine off , running it should be around 14.5vdc
If u buy a new battery please charge it overnight before fitting it , personally got one from Halfords , was a yuasa 019
Would also order a new HDC switch as at least then u know that is sorted out
Hope that also helps

Found some links for u about the F code , plse see if the gears are the same in what’s being displayed as u move the gear lever
But best to see what the codes are once everything has been cleared and battery in fully charged condition, as u can start to go down a rabbit hole so to speak so always best starting with the basics

Many thanks.
The 2.8v reading is on the multimeter on the replacement battery when the engine is off. This same battery reads 11.5v on the in car display 'secret menu'.
I connected a jump lead from the negative terminal to a little bolt near the battery that looks like it was being used as an earth already but I will go and put the multimeter on that to be sure.
I have cheked all the engine bay fuses. Not the glove box ones. Should I do that too?
I have been clearing the faults and they all immediately come back again but I will do as you say and clear again, and post new faults list here.
Thanks!2005 Disco 3 TDV6 SE Auto Bonatti Grey

Ur so very welcome
Personally would ignore the screen Vdc display but go on the multimeter readings seeing it’s directly at the battery , do u happen to know how old the current fitted battery is plse
Agreed with regards to ensuring there is a good earth by using the meter on continuity , a test light is also a very good way to test earths around the engine bay
Must confess suprised to hear they all come back straight away and that’s a very long list
Out of curiosity did u get round power washing the D3 or didn’t get round to it plse , thks
Indeed plse let us know how u get on

If u do have to test the cabin fuses behind the glovebox as a tip get 2 x cable ties and use them on the probes as per the picture to make life easier for your self
Hope it’s useful to u

OK, I have checked that the bolt I was connecting the jump lead to was OK and it was.
I have tested the voltage at the battery again and it is now reading 2.2v. I'm sure it was 2.8v earlier this afternoon. That seems worrying.
Even if the battery is only 2.2v now, I was getting 13.5v when jumping so that rules out a weak battery, no?
Do the brake lights come on with the key on but the engine not running? Mine are not. Does this point to the brake switch that causes a raft of odd problems?2005 Disco 3 TDV6 SE Auto Bonatti Grey

Having cleared the faults and then read them again, there is still a huge list but it's not the same. Just seemingly more random faults.

Long shot but have you checked the alternator hasn't popped?
I had similar issues - no warning just started with "F" on dash then a whole load of faults, Tried a spare battery that started the car but the duff alternator killed that as well.
Easy enough to check.I see no ships........
