Connecting Additional Power Source to Battery
Been a while since i dicked around with any power source that required a connection to a battery... probably 20 years ago when I used to run fat ass amps and stuff on my hot hatches
Quick question though - on the D4 battery, what's the best way of connecting a couple of cables so I can power my GSM dialer? Not had the battery cover off yet, so not sure if it's easy to add in another crimped connection (of reasonably thin cable it must be said).
Cheers.If in doot, flat oot!!

Hi Landylad, here are a few pics that should help.
The first 2 pics is of the positive terminal clamp in a D3 but they are the same in the D4 and you can either use the existing M8 bolt or if you have an M8 x 12mm bolt, you can use the other pre-tapped hole.
The third pic is the negative 6mm stud just in front of the cranking battery compartment of a D4

If you are adding or plan to add a few items then an aftermarket mini-fusebox can be handy. For a couple of items then attaching direct to the battery and a suitable earthing point is the easiest, but always include a fuse as close to the battery as possible.
When running cables outside the battery box consider adding convoluted tubing to protect cables from melting or chafing and tie things down so they do not become a hazard. For internal work piggy-back fuses are great.

Cheers guys.
The piggyback fuse sounds a good option, but a question.... it appears that you are only getting a positive feed. How do you achieve the negative feed as well?If in doot, flat oot!!

just attach the -ve lead to one of the many earth studs dotted around the vehicle.
where are you puting the GSM module ?
i had mine tucked away behind the left hand side air vent grill on the dash on the D3. you can run both the live and negative cable straight down to the fuse box and an earth stud. i havnt taken the vent off on the D4 so cant confirm if there is still space behind there

No room to swing a cat (or a GSM unit for that matter) on the D4. I would be interested to see where others have crammed in after market products under the hood. The only obvious place I can see is directly behind the FBH, but that may be a bit dodgy for heat transfer.
I would run a cable back to the 3rd row side buckets (where the jack is situated) but I dunno how I'd get it there. without major upheaval. The boy in Maplin suggested a sealed 12v battery, but then I'd have to be charging it every now and then. Not sure what sort of current it would draw (a standard mobile on standby can last for bloody ages so a battery 10 times the size of a lithium one, may last a month perhaps before it needs charged).
Not too sure - I'm not exactly an auto-electrician so am kinda flying by the seat of my pants on this one If in doot, flat oot!!

Hi Landylad, have you had a look the Driver’s side battery compartment.
While there are some devices there already, you should be able to move them around to fit your GSM module in there.
Loads of people have moved things around in that compartment and managed to get a 12v battery in there.2008 TDV8 RR Lux + 2009 D4 2.7

Not sure what's in there Drivesafe, but it's pipework of sorts... certainly not movable. I don't think that sections is the same as the D3. I would take a pic and show you, but it's pitch dark and I await SWMBO to off to bed so I can watch stuff on Sky planner If in doot, flat oot!!

you can move the bits around in the Right hand battery box inc the brake pipes, several people have. although I decided against it and ended up putting a battery back strapped in the boot.Duncan

See what you mean DiscoDunc... I think the wee box I've bought to house the GSM, should fit in there quite easily now I've had a closer look.If in doot, flat oot!!

Not a snowballs chance in hell you'd get a battery in my space. Is that a D4 in those pics? My ABS system is on the other side to that. Room for a small box hosting GSM dialer and a fag paper, but that's about it.If in doot, flat oot!!
